I’m new to this site and I must say I love it! [Smile][Smile][Smile] Keep up all the good posts and reports.
After reading about the perch at Rockport, I might have to try them again. Does any one have a good recipe for perch? I’ve tried some deep fried, and sautéed in butter, still have not found a good recipe. Please post if you have one. Thanks.

Ps. Where to go on Deer Creek for Walleye? I’ve heard Wallsbergh arm & rainbow bay are good. Anywhere else with the low water level?

[cool][#0000ff]Welcome to the board.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Perch are good just about any way you fix them, but everybody has different tastes and enjoys different styles of cooking. I am attaching PDF files for several of my favorite ways to prepare perch...and other species. Enjoy.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are no "secrets" about the walleyes under the ice at Deer Creek. Catching them is more a matter of timing and luck than of purposeful fishing. Those who fish just for walleyes are usually disappointed. Those who fish for other species sometimes catch a stray walleye. Seldom more than one walleye per trip per angler.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are a couple of DEEP water areas that the walleyes "winter up", but nobody I know has ever been successful at getting them to bite well. I am sure that if we could use live minnows, as with all of the other civilized states, we could probably have more success in targeting those wascally wallies.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That being said, I have taken a few off the rocks straight across from the Walsburg launch ramp, and up into the bay during higher water years. Kinda low this year and I have not tried it. There have been a couple of stray catches reported both from Rainbow Bay and off the point of the Island (peninsula). Winter catches are usually from water deeper than 30 feet and have been recorded from depths of over 60.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The best thing to do is get off by yourself, drill a few holes and then stay as quiet as possible. Use your two pole permit to soak whole crawlers or minnows near the bottom, either on jig heads or with just a small amount of weight to get them down.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Most of the walleyes I have taken from beneath the ice have hit large spoons with a big chunk of perch meat. That is what I used to use for perch, but caught lots of big trout and a few walleyes too. 3/8 oz. gold Kastmasters with some strips of green prism tape can make a good "perch urchin" pattern for deep jigging.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck.[/#0000ff]

Well I never thought I would say this but have you guys ever tried frying the egg sacks of the perch? My grandma escaped from Germany during the war and while they were on rashions they had to use every bit of the fish to survive. Well I brought home some perch while she was visiting from Idaho and she about had a cow that I wasn't going to eat the eggs. So, I dipped them in the egg and then the bread cumbs and seasoning and fried them.

I thought they tasted great and so did my boys. I was very surprised. The egg sacks on the ones we caught from Echo were big. Just make sure you cook them long enough so that it is fully cooked. There great!
