Went to Causey on Saturday and fished the scout arm. We arrived at about 9:00 and started our descent down the steep face. We were surprized to a moose running around on the ice in our spot. When we got down to the edge of the ice, I tried to step out on the ice and went through up to my waist. Everybody else did the same thing but we managed to flop up onto the solid 8 inches (just the edges are soft). We began fishing and started whipping fish out left and right. We caught Splake, Cutts, Bows, and Tigers and one that we caught looked kind of like a brook but I think it is just a dark splake. We caught 30 fish between the three of us in about two hours and at 12:00 the fishing came to a halt and we left with our limits of fish. The hot bait was salmon eggs but they were also hitting jigs tipped with powerbait.
There are deer, elk, and moose everywhere up there right now, so if you want to get out and see some wildlife, go fish Causey. I took some video of a nice Bull Elk and some turkeys on the way up, when I figure it out I will post it. I took some pics of the fish, see if you can figure out if the top fish on the last picture is a splake or a brook.

Sounds like a great day on the ice. I agree with your assessment on the dark splake. How bad was the snow and slush? I know that area has been getting pounded with snow. Glad to hear that you were able to see all that wildlife as well.

Nice looking fish Matt, it looks like they are still running on the small side. Compared to the other three fish that bow looks almost plain[unsure]. Sounds like a cool day with all the fish and wildlife you guys saw. In that last picture it looks like a splake to me, I think a brook trout would have some halo spots of different colors. Did the moose have a hard time getting off the ice, did it fall through?

For a splake that fish actually has a little meat on it's bones. Nice report.

That pic with the 4 species is one of the coolest pics I have ever seen!

Thanks for sharing.

Snow and slush wasn't too bad. There was about six inches of snow on top of 3 inches of slush. If we walked really light, we wouldn't break through to the slush.
The fish were on the smaller side (10-14 inches), but it sure beats the last three years of catching 6 inch splake all day long. I really enjoyed catching different species and the size wasn't too bad. Good pan sized fish.
We scared that moose so bad that he ran full blast all way up to the dam and he probably scared the fisherman up there. Don't where he went after that.

Definitely a splake. The head has definite laker genetics. Also the tail is deeply forked.....brookies have squarish or less deep forks on their tails. Nice job.....love that pic with four species together.

With my extensive trout experience[crazy] I would say it's a splake. I agree with the others, that's an awesome pic of the four species. I attached a pic of a splake from Fish Lake, they could be long lost brothers.

Yeah, I thought that it was probably just a darker splake. The thing that kind of Confused me was the dark plain back. All the other splake we were catching had a maze pattern on the back and were considerably lighter in color. Plus I have caught brooks in the same exact spot before.

We had the same expierence up there but instead of catching a tiger trout for our four different kinds of fish my friend caught a 21" brown to make 4. I would like to catch all five one day. Nice pics!

Yea, that would be cool or 6 with a kokanee, I bet that would be a hard one to pull off though[crazy]. WH2

Were you the group fishing next to us in the scout arm or were you up in the Dam area?

Ohh it was a few weeks ago. We fished on the South end and also in the middle arm off of the cliffs.

Great photos! If you want to email me the video I can post it for you on the DWR website/fishing report. I think that is a great addition to the report.

Thanks for posting your report!
