[font "Pristina"][green][size 4][cool]Anyone use the pitzen knot on a regular basis? Apparently it is stronger than a clinch knot retaining about 95% of the tippets strength. In several tests my line broke away from the knot itself.[/size][/green][/font]

I have never heard of nor seen that knot. Do you have a pictoral or video description of it??[cool]

I can't see the link. All I see is a red X in a box.[crazy]

[sly]It dont matter what it is, if it failed the knot strength test repeatedly that knot would have Pitzen me off enough to go back to my tripple overhand knot.

My eyes are going bad, my hands are getting numb with the cold so I'm gonna have to learn a knot that I can tie in the dark.[unsure]

Any of you seniors have the answer to that one?

The pitzen is also called the 16-20 knot.

It is suppose to be a very good knot according to a number of other people that have done a bunch of testing of knots but I have also been Pitzen off also as I can not reliably tie it to be consistantly strong.

So no I do not use it.

For your cold fingers or low light conditions you might try some of these knots.

On the "fly anglers on line" web site. On their knot page click on the "weavers knot". It is a knot you can do with your gloves on.

[unimpressed]Dry Rod, that looks kinda like a variation of the improved cinch knot.
I think I see why it failed the Knot strength test. It has a lot of crossovers that are trapped and being pinched down on.

I used to have a link to a knot page where the knots were animated and you could count the laps and crossovers as the knot tied itself in knots right before your eyes.

It's hard to discuss knots for Fly fishing when we have an inch of snow on the ground and the wind is gusting to 20 Mph.

I'll get some string and try those knots in the last post.
Thanks.
PS: I've never had a knot failure with that tripple overhand knot I've been using. Dont know what its called.
Come to think of it, the Blood knot is another knot I've never experienced a failure either.

How about a Bowline? That would leave have great knot strength and never come apart. I may practice that one to see if I could do it on the stream with chilly fingers and watery eyes.

Hey there Thudpucker - the knot didn't fail my test. To the contrary it held up quite well. The line always broke first about several inches up from the knot. I would put the hook in a vise then wrap the other end of the line around the shaft of a screw driver and provide a steady pull.
BTW this past Monday it was 81º in my town. Today's high was 62º. One night the low was 60º & two days later it was 39º. Kind of difficult to know whether to wear shorts or what. LOL

[Sad]Harummmphhh, well then...I sure went off on a tangent didn't I?
Next time I'll read with my eyes a little closer to the Screen.
It's so cold down here my eyes are maybe not as open as they could be.

I went to google and looked up those knots and came up with three places with animated knots.
One was my old site I'd lost (Grog).

If it ever warms up again, I might get some fishing line out of the Barn and try some of these knots.
I'm real curious about that Bowline. It's used in so many places, why not a hook-knot?

If this Glacier dont move off and let us be, It wont matter.
With the water as low as it is, 22-24 feet down from the normal winter low. The Temps are dipping down into the teens at night.
I'll be surprised if our Winter fish kill isnt way beyound the normal.

Our Trout unlimited chapter meets later on this month. I'll find out from the Stream-watchers just how the Rainbow have fared over this horrible winter.

Hey there Thudpucker - you must have been in the boy scouts for that is where I learned to tie the bowline. It will hold like hell on a hook but the only trouble is that one has to tie it real close to the eye since it won't slide like a slip knot. 99% of the fishing knots we tie are a version of one form or another of a slip knot. Otherwise one couldn't clinch in down. BTW I hear that the bowline was a favorite on the old sailing ships. So was the clove hitch, timber hitch, etc.

[Smile]I was in troop 233. The scourage of the South Seattle boys.

A friend had a Beach Set Net permit.
You anchor one end of a 3/4" line on the beach and the other end goes out in the water and anchors to a large weight.
The net hangs off this line.
He always used a Bowline because its reputation is that it can always be untied.
Well, nearly always.
After a few tides and a lot of fish and seaweed etc got hung in that net and the pressure of the surging water pulled that Bowline tight.

It was the end of the Season and we had to get the net out of the water.
The Knot wouldnt budge. We couldn't budge it with a hammer.
We ran out of time and waded back to the beach.
We had to wait for one more tide to go by before we could get back out to the Anchor and untie the line. During that tide we came up with some sharpend pegs and a hammer to loosen up the coils.

I think that may be why the Sailors kept Fire Axe's by each door on a ship. To chop off a stubborn knot.

half hitch, double half hitch, bowline on a bight (sometimes used as a sling since it has two big loops you could slip your legs thru), etc.. but.. here is a thought.. we have discussed before using a surgeons loop to give the fly a more natural movement.. couldnt you substitute the bowline (using a loop instead of a single line) ???? just a curious thought...
