So I was out in the garage getting my gear ready for Bear Lake and when I opened my box of jigs I found that they are starting to discolor. It is kind of a white pastey stuff that is formong. This is the second time I have had this problem. Last time I thought that maybe it was the smelly jelly so after I replaced all the jigs I kept the smelly jelly on the bait only. Well now it's back again. These are just my lake trout jigs, and none of my other jigs I regularly use have ever had this problem. Can any of you tell me what's going on with them? I just went and bought all new jig bodies and new plastic boxes to keep them in.

[black]I can only guess on this one, but I think that you have purchased standard plastic boxes of the shelf, and not those made by tackle manufacturers, made from a plastic formulated to prevent this problem.[/black]

I haven't seen or heard of this problem for several years. It used to be quite a common occurrence.

Hi Travis, I've some of my Bear lake Jigs do that same thing only discolors the leadhead.I personnally think it is the Smelly Jelly that turns it white like that. I always put a little on the Jighead before I slip the Tube over it so it makes sense to me. Problem is that I never think about taking the jigs apart to clean them. Jut my Opinion.
I'm not sure that the type of tackle box has anything to do with it, But anything is possible.

[cool][#0000ff]If you are talking about plain leadheads, with no paint on them, there are several things that can oxidize the lead and cause the white "dandruff". The solvents in plastic baits and in many attractants can start the process. After that, just normal exposure to the atmosphere will keep it going.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are a lot of metal polishes you can use to brighten them up again. A soak in acetone or even vinegar can help clean them up. But, be sure to rinse them and dry them well afterwards or they will turn nasty again.[/#0000ff]
