Anyone have tips for fishing in Korea. I'll be at Osan so my travel will be limited. I am taking fresh and saltwater tackle for either ocassion. thanks

Osan eh? Stationed or exercise? I went there for Full Eagle a few years back. Osan is nice because if it hasn't changed, the bars are part of the main gate. Pretty cool huh? LOL

As for the fishing, i'm not too sure. I know they've got fish there, I just never had the chance. Get to know some of the locals, they'll point you in the right direction.

I'll be stationed there for a year, what luck. Maybe I'll have to pay some locals for a few secret spots. Thanks for the tip.

Just give them a few fish, they will be happy...

Got an email from a friend in Korea just yesterday... you might want to bring your "ICE Fishing" gear. LOL

He'll be back in Hawaii soon and can't wait to warm up.
I'll ask him about the fishing... he should know.
Aloha,
Stan

Today is my first in country and the BX has no tackle what so ever. My comrads have never been fishing here so I am going out into the blue with no leads. If anyone has some ideas for some spots to try let me know. Thanks a bunch.

Dude, that sucks there are no resources for you there. As far as ordering your tackle, go to this site:

www.aafes.com

That's the online ordering site for the BX. You still pay no taxes and most times no shipping. (military only guys and gals) They'll send it right to you. Also, check out this link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishing/news/story?page=f_fea_AA_Korea_mandarin_J.Card

It talks about the Mandarin fish, apparently a prized catch in Korean waters. Google it and maybe you'll obtain some tactics info.

So I found the river on the other side of the flight line. Anyone every fish it before? There are koreans out there everyday but they didn't want to speak up about anything. My guess is carp. If you google earth it you'll see which river I'm talking about. Tried squid for about 3 hours with no results. Any other bait I should be using? P.S. I hate carp but hey it's fishing.

Carp will usually go for bread balls, popcorn and sweet morsels. When using bread, be sure to squeeze it into a tight ball on the hook or simply form it around your #10 trebble hook.

Carp will hit flies too. When they are in the top feeding mode, they like to slurp stuff from the top of the water.

There are a few more suggestion, but try these first.[cool]

fishing in korea is all right. the fish in the han river are big.
some one told me that there are bass in the river. but haven't
seen one yet. i really don't know what the the fishes names
are but i do know that there are eel like fish in there. most of
the korean old men are fishing for them. they mostly use
worms and earthworms type. well maybe not that big. i
heard that the eels are pretty big also. i have only seen
some small ones. if you are going to use lures you might
want to get a boat. i tried using some and didn't catch a thing.
but it might have been something i was doing. i like using
lures but i like catching fish and to that i need to do what the
korean people do. o and you will see people fishing on the
banks of irrigation ditch. they use different fishing poles and
this strange bait called dop bop. its like a power that you
turn into jelly or a paste like substance. that is the best way i
can explain it. and the fish in there remind me of really big
gold fish but more brownish color. o and also fresh water
crab. they like to fish for those too. haven't really gone ocean
fishing. so i cant help you in that region sorry. and haven't
been to the mountains neither.

not true. if your getting stationed at osan and want to fish that bad, head out the main gate, snag a cab and tell the driver you want to go to the river next to Camp Humphries. 99% know exactly where you are talking about. they will take you to this lodge looking'ish place thats about 2 miles from the main gate at humphries and about 11miles from osan. you can rent a river side "cabin" for about 50,000 WON (like 55 bucks) for the night and have a blast. im not sure of the rivers name, but i know for absosulte certanty (sp) they have large mouth in that river due to the fact my buddy caught 5 when we partied out there. they have trout fishing also near Tactical Area (TA) Tom and TA Jerry. there is a rather large river that flows through both TA's and it has some kind of trout. they are cherry red, but have the body of a rainbow. i fished thiose rivers during exercises and actually caught a few. i DO NOT trust the quality of enviroment, so there fore i did not eat anything that we caught. in the river near osan/the hump, they have carp, some wierd ass lookming cat fish, and something that resembles a drum. if you take the train to Yongsan (trust me, you will not be the oddball with the fishing gear in the train, you will be looked at loike everyone else, i miss the blind guy walking through the trian begging for money, he cant see, yet when he dropped 5000WON he knew exactly where it went) you get off at yongsan station. hail a cab and ask him to take you to the tourist fishing club. i cant recall the web site off the top of my head and will have to do some looking for ya. anywho, he takes you to this little club thats on the banks of the Han river. you can hire a boat for a few hours at a very resopnable rate and hell take you anywhere you want to fish. lots of back sloughs, and rip rap to fish. you will see alot of ranger bass boats there, bass fishing is HUGE in korea, and Japan (while i was in both countries) and its not odd at all for one of these guys to come up tol you and say hello, and ask in broken english how the fishing is.

your actually heading at a great time, looks like curfew is slowly being scaled back, and if your on leave status in the country it doesent apply to you. dont get stuck at osan like i did alot (ie i was in the bars more then i was on base). i actually had to get out and find this stuff out for myself. it did help that the bar i visited the most, the bar owner, she was married to a retired military member, and he loves to fish! he was the one that pointed me in the right direction for fishing all of the time.

outside of thew CPX gate (the back gate) of osan, there is actually a little tackle shop, it was always neat and fun going in there!

the best bar (where i got my info) was two blocks out the Main gate, next to the Thai resturant called The Apple. its a sports bar, ie no juicies (trust me if you dont know what they are you will, and FAST!). when you go in there ask for "momma" and when you introduce yourself, tell her Coke (just like the drink) says hello!
