Finally, a good day. Went fishing at Echo today with my neighbor. We’re both retired, don’t you know? He bought breakfast; I drove!

Got to Echo about 8:00 AM and were the only ones in the lot at South Beach. Unloaded everything and made the run to the resort. Its two miles as the snowmobile drives. On the way, we passed a yellow ATV all by itself. The tires were only half showing and not a soul was near by. Must have gotten stuck or broke down the day before. It had been there awhile.

Got to a likely looking spot and set up the tent with two holes in 40 feet of water. Marked fish on the bottom as soon as the lure got down there, but they would not bite. Tried several different lures and baits – nothing. So we packed up and moved in to 32 feet of water and set up again. Jackpot.

Had fish on the ice in less than a minute. Now were talking. We caught our share of small perch (under 6”), but at least they were biting. We even caught two 15” trout right on the bottom were the perch were. We let them both go. We kept all the perch over 6” and all but one were between 7” and 9”. Want proof? Here it is.

I tried the orange Swedish Pimple that worked so good at Hyrum last Tuesday but the Echo perch didn’t care for it at all. The best combination was a foraging minnow tipped with a small piece of perch meat or perch eye. The perch meat will last a lot longer than the eye, so we used that mostly. The foraging minnows were either perch color or orange and white. The rainbow color didn’t work nearly as well as the other two. We were fishing a foot or less off the bottom but some fish would come up two feet to take a look on the way down.

We ended up bringing home 11 perch and served them up as boneless fillets breaded in Cabelas fish breading, Cajon style, and pan fried to a golden brown. They were served with coleslaw and fried potatoes with an ice cold Coke. Does it get any better than that? I don’t think so. Here’s what the take home looked like.

I just may have to head back out tomorrow before our next storm hits.
