I ran acrossed this info on another internet source and thought I would share - these are the best voltages for the species targeted:

SPECIES VOLTAGE
Chinook (King) Salmon .600 volts
Coho (Silver) Salmon .650 volts
Sockeye Salmon .750 volts
Kokanee Salmon .650 volts
Halibut .450 volts *
Laketrout (Mackinaw) .650 volts
Rainbow; Brown Trout .650 volts
Cutthroat Trout .650 volts
Black Bass .750 volts *
Sharks .400 volts *
Striped Bass .650 volts *
Sturgeon .500 volts *
Catfish .500 volts

I have been considering purchasing a Black Box because I have heard they produce pretty good results...
ProTroll has their model for about $90.

Give me some feedback from fisher-people that have added this hardware to their weapons array. Worth the $$ or not??

[size 2]I bought Cabela's Black Box (BB) last year. Have completely bought into the idea that fish are attracted/repelled to specific levels of electrical current. Have not installed it yet because I ended up having too much fun jigging at Strawberry. Intend to install b4 softwater.

The BB (obviously) changes the "force field" around your boat. You'll need to measure your boat's natural voltage (NV) b4 install. Your NV s/b between .7 and .8. I would suggest that you determine that b4 purchase. Because if you're out of the zone, you gotta identify which electrical component(s) is causing the problem. We're talkin grounding and bonding wire stuff. Which = TIME. So take a voltage reading with all electrical off, boat in +10' of water, d-rigger ball 'bout 4' in the water. Do it away from man-made structure (tends to radiate its own NV). Hold your breath and hope your DC voltage reads between .7 and .8. My alum Smokercraft was .766 ( thank the stars). Otherwise, have fun with the process of elimination. My bias here; I never have taken to electrical.

The downside of this deal, as I see it, is how far back the lure is trolled from the ball, which is the end point of your radiating charge from the BB. The further back, the less the imposed voltage remains. How much of a downside that is I can't say.

I also suggest searching BFT and the Internet re: BB. Plenty of info around.

Having written the above, when all is said and done, if you can afford to take $100 out of your retirement fund, I say give it a go.

This Black box thing is new to me, is the idea to attract fish with electrical current? The provided link went to a domain registration site so I couldnt get info on what they are.

I just bought an underwater Camera and I thought that was high-falutin'. [Wink]
BTW- Cabelas is selling their cameras for $99.00 instead of $117.00 just in case anyone is looking.

That is some great info Craig, thanks for sharing. I've been fishing with Reelfast for the last year and he runs a black box(BB) on his down riggers. We have tried it on and off and haven't noticed a lot of difference. We will have to give it a try with the voltages you have listed and see if it can make a difference. I bet there isn't a lot of folks that troll for catfish, at least on purpose[Wink]. Maybe Dan(Reelfast) will chime in here and tell you more about his BB.
