utwalleye and myself hit swim beach today hard for mac,s. only one problem some one had a perch party up ther superbowl weekend and smoked the whole darn bay. it looks like swiss chese. im not kidding. all the good humps i have caught fish on i hit. holes on all. only saw 6 fish on my finder all day. no bites not even looks. i would drop on them and they would shoot up 15ft from the jig and run off the screan. that means alot of novice lake trout hunters hit it hard while not knowing how to fish for the big trout. edjucated them beond beleife!!! ive never seen them run off like they were gun shot. so to whoever you are thank you for teaching them so good. and to those planning a trip. do ya need pratice jigging caulse thats what is instore for most. 6 guys fished it today. kyle a guide on fg he was with muscleman. 2 guys from rock springs super nice guys. my auger cord broke and they alowed us to barrow theirs anytime. and utwalleye and myself. every one of us has 30 plus yrs jigging. and all had same results? scatterd out over a 2 square mile area? save gas and agravation. wish i would have had this heads up. 140 bucks in gas later.[unsure] im sure chucks 2 cents will be intresting.lol good fishing guys.

The only thing I can say is.... What???? Sounds like maybe you need to improve your techniques, I have never heard an angler at the Berry or any other lake get skunked and blame it on people that don't know how to fish.... Maybe you are getting fishing and coyote hunting mixed up.

hey crossineyes sorry to hear that the fishin was slow for you guys. How thick was the ice and how are the pressure ridges getting out to the humps. It supposed to be cold this week and then start warming up this weekend. Good luck fishin on your next time out.

I'm not real familiar with FG, only fished it three times. Where exactly is swim beach? Too bad about the macks not cooperating, were you fishing for the bigguns'?

[#808000]LMAO comparing Strawberry to the Gorge and Cutts to a Macks, too funny. Yes, fishing pressure does dramatically effect fishing for big macks at Flaming Gorge.[/#808000]

Hey Crossineyes, That is a bummer on your trip, I heard from a few other people that it was very packed last weekend with Jerkin Jiggers.

Next to wind (in open water), fishing pressure is often the biggest factor in how well the big macks respond to a jig in thier face. That's assuming that the presentation of the jig is "correct" to begin with. Those big, old fish have seen it all, been caught over and over, and KNOW when its safe or not safe to consider eating something. When there's lures all in their face, they really get lock-jawed most days.
They're hard enough to catch with nobody bothering them. When they're getting hammered, it gets nearly useless. You have to remember that most trout don't live longer than a few years. The bigger macks in the Gorge are 15-30+ years old. They learn. They're not born "educated," which is why the 5-pound pups are so easy to catch. After a decade or two though, they wise-up.

I noticed this my self when I fished anvil a while back. I will probably stay with rainbows till the ice comes off.

Sweet! I am headed to swim beach on the 16th! Should I seriously reconsider or will a couple weeks be enough to let them chill! Or should I try a different area! Linwood Bay maybe? Huge bummer! Thanks for ruining my trip before I even get there CROSSINEYES! LOL! Just kidding, I will still give it a shot, just wondering if going somewhere else might be better!

Wrong answer. Those fish have the ability to learn. I believe Crossineye's observation is correct.
Now if you're as bright as a mack, learn from this thread. Don't hold over fish that don't want to be caught.
Wastes time while the beer's gettin warm.[cool]

My brother and I fished swimbeach sun. and part of mon. We hooked four but not well enough to get them to the deck.(I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there). The wind was terrible and there were alot of people out. Bummer when you drive that far and spend that much money and don't even get a fish on the ice.
