By brother bought a new strike master from Cabelas at the beginning of the ice season. He has only used it a half a dozen times. Last weekend he notices that the "spade-thingy" on the bottom of the auger, that keeps the auger centered, had broken off. I have an eskimo and mine can be replaced, but he said that a weld had broken on his. Has anyone else noticed this or had to get it replaced? I don't know how difficult it would be to keep the auger from running on you, especially when starting your hole. I would imagine that it would be better to have that spade attached.

hey hawkez I think that it might try to jump around on you with out that starter point. I have bought blades, gas caps etc.
From D-Rock supply and repair and they also work on strikemaster augers.

He got it from Cabelas, take it back and explain the situation to them and ask them what to do about it. He will probably walk out of there with a new auger.

Definately take it back. Cabelas is extremely good about returns and will give him a new auger. If welds are breaking after only a few uses he deserves a replacement. Cabelas has very good customer service and take their 100% satisfaction guarantee very serious.

Heck ya, take it back! It will be in the bargain cave a couple days later [crazy]

I bought my first power auger this year. It was an Eskimo brand, and I bought it from Sportsman's Warehouse. The first time I took it fishing (I had run it once for about 15 minutes, spinning the auger with the blade cover on it in the snow), it was seized in the pull rope department. I took it back, and since they had no more power augers they were going to give me a gift card. I finally got my money back and went to Cabelas.
Cabelas sold me a Strikemaster. I got home and the blade cover was cracked, and they swapped it out teh next day - no questions asked. When I was talking to the fishing department guys about the trials and tribulations I had been through, they told me they would make good any sale, no matter what. It cost me 100 bucks more than the Eskimo brand, but the fact that I have used it all season since then with no problems makes it worth it in my opinion.
I say take it back, they should take care of him.

I have a Strike Master Lazer Mag auger that I bought in 2000. It has been the best auger I have delt with. My dad has a Jiffy, and it hasn't been nearly as dependable. The only advice, clean the air filter every season, change spark plugs, and "summerize" the auger motor. This is the only maintenance i have done on mine and it has been working great.
