LIHU"˜E - The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has temporarily suspended issuing camping permits for the remote Kalalau Trail, Kalalau Valley camping area in the Na Pali Coast State Park, due to weather and trail conditions and dangerous stream crossings caused by current heavy rains.

Trail closure signs have been posted at the information booth at the trailhead and at the trailhead itself.

"Due to continued forecasts of localized thunderstorms and flash flooding, no camping or hiking permits will be issued until Friday, February 8, at the earliest, weather permitting," said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.

"During rainy periods, DLNR advises hikers and campers to avoid going out on trails due to risk of rising streams, flash flooding, falling trees and other natural hazards," Thielen said.

The Kalalau Trail traverses exceptionally scenic high sea cliffs and lush stream valleys with plunging waterfalls. The trail head is located at the end of Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56) in Ha"˜ena State Park.

Information about the Kalalau Trail and other state parks is available online at http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dsp/, or through the DLNR Division of State Parks Kaua"˜i district office at (808) 274-3444.
