Full Version: Deer Creek Spring Walleye Run?

I realize this is a little premature, but about when does the walleye spawn start heating up, if ever, on Deer Creek? With the water as low as it is, I am thinking of hitting it hard in mid-April around the island. Does that sound about right?

Keep in mind that young kid a couple years ago accidentally caught the new state record 12 lb. walleye there at DC. He was trolling with his dad just to see how his new fishing pole would work on a stormy day. I bet the fishing there could be half-decent for walleye if you could find them at the right time.

(Sorry, turns out it was NOT a record, as I have been informed)

[black]Because walleye will run up stream during the spawn if possible, I would think that the channel just below the bridge at the inlet would be a good place to fish during the spawn.[/black]

Over the years, many large walleye have come out of the waters around the bridge during the spawning run.

For the rest of the year, the walleye have been pretty hard to locate on a consistent basis.

I have marked fish deep in the channel running through the east part of the lake, fished for them with the usual walleye baits, but Sad to say, have had very little success. It could be that most of the fish that I marked, were not walleye.

I don't mean to be contrary, but the walleye record is 15lb 9oz set in 1991. It was, however, in the Provo going into Deer Creek.

I know that there is alot of snagging that goes on there and other places during the spawn, wish we could convince the DWR to close these areas during the spawn like the Willard Bay inlet.[crazy]

most the eyes in dc stopped running up the river back when jrdnell was built. see the water in the river is to cold now since it comes off the bottom of jrdn L so the fish shifted to smaller steams and lake structure for spawning. been fishing it for eyes duuring the spawn for 18 yrs now. wait till after april and hit the flats if you want eyes outa dc. some fish are using the river just not in large #s. and the local heber boys will run ya off pritty quick. they are elbow to elbow durring april under that charlston bridge. snagging.

walleye spawning temp is just about 42-47 deg. walleye feeding temp is about 62, well eyes feed in any temp. but really get with it when the water gets to 62. a big populating of eyes spawn around the lake shore, but their is still a big part that run up river. with the water being soo cold coming in now the fish set out a few hundred yards in the deeper holes and wait for their time and run up river drop their eggs and back in the lake by morning. later chuck

See my avatar... study it closely, you will get a bearing on its location... Deer creek yup! Study it even more closely you probably can figure the exact location of my trophy. This was on June 4th... prime time for DC.

Sorry, it was a 15 lber out of the Provo. When I read the story I thought it was the new state record for some reason.

[black]Just for general information, several years ago, a walleye was "caught" in the area of the bridge at DC. The fish weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 lbs. (memory failed)[/black]
There was a big dispute about it being caught or snagged. The DWR did a laboratory study on the fish, and determined that it was snagged, so no record.

There were also some attempts at a state record by stuffing some other fish with lead weights.

[black]I'm reasonably sure that walleye exceeding the 15 lb. record have been caught out of Utah Lake.[/black]

WAS THE GUYS NAME RAY MONTOYA? LMFAO. HE SNAGGED THAT FISH WITH A J 13 RAPALA IN THE TOP OF ITS HEAD RIGHT UNDER THE BRIDGE. HE IS THE SNAG MASTER. HE NOW LIVES IN MONTANA. WATCHED HIM SNAG MANY BACK IN THE DAY AT THE BUBLE UP.

that guy was roy montoya he lived in heber. there's a funny storie about that fish. that fish weight just over 13lbs. and it was reported to the dwr as being snagged by a bunch of people. while this was in the law system the 15lb. walleye was caught and that case was thrown out of court. later chuck
