Decided to meet my brother and his friend at Piute after last weeks 60+ fish in 4 hours event. I pull up at 10 to 7 and walk to the dam - wanted to try a new spot. Auger starts up and drills three holes just fine and then on the fourth hole it craps out and doesn't want to start. We fished the three holes for a while landing a few but they were too deep. We wanted to move but the auger wouldn't start. I had just put more new gas in so I thought maybe bad gas (that's what my wife always says[Wink]).

So we march back to the car, load everything up, head in to Marysville and get new premium gas. Still nothing.[mad]

Figure that the spark plug is the only thing less that we can check so we walk over to the mechanic across the street. He takes it out and sure enough, there is crap in between the connection (?). He air sprays it off and first pull, vroom. Back in action.

Head back to Piute but this time set up camp in the exact same spot as the week before. We landed 8 or so in 3 hours which is ok but so much slower than last week. The fish that came through on the finder usually bit, but there just weren't many fish around. We did better than most from what I saw. The biggest went about 19" and 2.75lbs.

This was just not good enough fishing for the $50 in gas.[Sad] Two lessons learned:
1. Stay closer to home
2. Avoid ice fishing during a full moon (my opinion)

Still a nice day to be out. I will likely be going to the berry, nelle or yuba on friday if anyone wants to join - pm me.

Heres two more lessons for you:
1. Carry a manual auger, they are priceless
2. Junction is about half the distance to piute then marysvile when you are making a return trip [blush]

Although it was slow fishing it is hard to beat fishing at piute

I thought about going to Junction but didn't know if they would have the facilities I needed. In hindsight, going to Junction for the auger and continuing on to Otter Creek might have been better. Oh well.

How does Piute fish the end of April from float tubes??[Smile] We are going on a three day fishing trip to Southern Utah around the 24th of April and am wondering how Piute and OC do that time of year. How do you fish them open water?

I fished OC after ice out last year and the fish were shallow. Float tubing should be good. I guess i should take my boat and tube out there for a 2 day weekend this spring.[Wink]

Fish are shallow and close to shore. P.M. me if you want some more info.

Hey Jared, both Oc and Piute can be very good when the ice comes off the only problem I have had is finding a day the wind don't blow you off the lake in the spring.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I guess I'll let the wind reports determine if we go there.
