Even though this is not a fishing report I thought that I would return the favor for all the info on the Preston Area lakes. The wife and I decided to visit my aunt and uncle up in Logan, Ut today and also take a drive up and see how my favorite Preston Area lakes were doing as far as water (ice) level. I drove by Foster, Glendale and Lamont and to my amazment they were all about 75%-85% full, even though they were capped with ice. Hopefully they can stay that way for a lot longer this summer!!! I dont know exactly what fish do when there is a sheet of ice above them, but hopefully they are doing good in numbers and we have another great summer of fishing these lakes. I wish I would have made it over to Twin, guess there is always next time and hopefully "next time" is when the ice is off and I can finally get my boat wet!!! Thanks again for all the info you guys provide me on these lakes when I dont get a chance to make it up there!!!

Thanks for the update. The Preston lakes will fill up like this every year, even during a drought. The real question is how long will they keep the water. Last fall it was said the Bear River basin needs 110% precipitation to meet the water rights of farmers, hydropower, etc. Currently the Bear River Basin is 99% for snow pack and 101% for precipitation.

Thanks for the info. Now does that mean if we get 110% precipitation and the farmers/hydorpower/etc get their share that the lakes will stay full or will they go as low as this past summer?

The next 3 months will determine what happens. Slow run off and some good showers. Brian is right- no matter what they will be full by mid spring-

full, but muddy. It usually takes a while for the fishing to get good while the lakes are really muddy. That is just my take on spring fishing in the preston area.

true to a point but some fish well right at ice off and the water is pretty dirty- then they have a week or two slow down and then pick right up- especially using chrominids

Yeah, your right, ice off can be really fun. You have to hit it the right days.

Well it has been a fre weeks since I was last up in the Preston Area and was wondering if the warm weather has done any damage to the ice? Has anyone been around any of the area lakes and know the conditions or when I might be able to launch my boat? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Any prediction when the ice will be off of these lakes?

Well right now we are certainly behind where it was at last year. But once it starts it's gone quickly off those smaller lakes. Depending on weather I would say you will see definite progress in 2 weeks.

We have been much colder up here with highs for the most part being in the 30's. We have had highs in the 50 the past couple of days but the ice is still very thick (16" on Treasureton). I would guess the edges will start clearing within a couple of weeks but it might be mid April before lakes are ice free. It all depends on the weather and wind. On most of these lakes fishing is really good for a week after ice off and than it shuts down for a couple of weeks while they turnover. By the first of May fishing is always great.

Any new word on the ice conditions of the lakes up there? Just curious, since I wont be able to make it up this weekend and hoped maybe the ice will be off by the following weekend. If not I am going to fish the Narrows. Will report. Thanks for any info.

My co worker is from Dayton but he is ice fishing today so I won't have a report until Monday. His feeling though last week was that it still will be a little while until you will be fishing from a boat.

Any idea how the Preston Area Lakes are looking as far as open water? I noticed in Northern Utah that Hyrum and Newton were open so I am assuming that Glendale, Twin Lakes, Johnson and Condie would be open too. I am sure the water temps are pretty low, but anything is better than nothing!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think you are correct on those assumptions. Porky is still frozen- open water at the east end. After today a lot more of that lake will open.

Talked to a friend last night and devils creek opened up with over 100+ feet of open water around edges just yesterday. He goes by there daily so it shouldnt be long and a couple around Malad are also open but no fish biting there.
