Thinking about heading to either Echo or Rockport this Saturday. Planning on taking the wife ice fishing for the first time and would rather not have her take a cold bath for her first experience. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I hope someone chimes in. Usually the first ice experience for the wife is a long lasting one, especially if it's snowing and cold...trust me. It took me seven years for me to get my wife back out on the ice. If there are no recent updates here you can check the dwr fish report http://www.wildlife.utah.gov/fishing/reports.php

I was up at rockport last night and the ice was fine. not any slush and the edges were good. the ice was 14 inches or so thick.

It sounds like it there should be good ice conditions there this Saturday. I am planning on going there this Saturday with two of my grandchildren. Did you catch any fish and where were you fishing and how deep.

The edges at Echo are getting soft. If you try it this weekend take a long board or tall boots to get on. Once you get on the ice it is good. gshorthair

Thanks for the advice and ice reports. This was my first time post on this site and am shocked by how promptly folks are willing to help answer questions and provide good advice.

I agree with gshorthair. Tall boots are the order of the day on just about every ice pond. The warm weather is causing some runoff to start filling the reservoirs and this in turn raises the ice up and this leaves a gap at the edges.

I use my 5mm, chest high waders with 1600 gram boots this time of year. The extra weight is over ridden by being dry getting on and off the ice. Think about it.

I'm planning on going to Echo myself tomorrow. If you see an old guy with camo waders on stop by and say hello.

I fished Echo yesterday. I was down by the dam. The edges are really soft! I put one leg through up to my knee, scratched up the other one as it hit the rocks[pirate]. There was places you could get on the ice if you are careful. Once out there plan on 20" of ice. There was no slush and only a few inches of hard snow.

Good luck to ya. Fishing was slow for me. I was there for perch and only had two bites from 10:30-2:30. Landed one 22" brown on one of those bites.
