Utah lake has lots of open water and if or when we get some wind it will most likely push the ice off the lake soon...

Some are fishing the open water and some getting a few...

Great news, need the soft water. We are heading done too Willow Beach next weekend, for big Strippers.

When would you dare launch your boat?

I was there yesterday and there is indeed quite a bit of open water. I think that most all of the ice will be off sometimes within this next week and launching could be possible next Wednesday...

When will you dare launch a boat? Based on a long history of watching Utah lake early in the spring my observation is this: The warming days will start to open up significant areas. Winds will begin pushing the ice from the lake. I have seen the piled up ice close the road west of Lincoln Beach.

Once that happens, the balance of the ice will either be blown off the lake or it will melt.

I haven't seen it today, but plan on driving down to Lincoln beach this afternoon.

In five decades, I do not ever remember ice being on the lake on St. Patricks day.

I'm not much of a prognosticator, but I'll take bets the ice will be gone from Utah lake by the 16th.

Yuba will follow shortly after. PaliSades will open up in the same time period. By the end of the month the real fishing waters like Deer Creek,Minersville, Ottercreek and Jordenelle, etc will open up. The high country lakes will take until May and some of them will be iced over until June.

Get your tackle ready. Pull your boats, pontoons or lawn chairs out and get them ready. It's about to begin.

I'll have my boat on Utah lake on the 15th looking for white bass and walleye. While that is happening I'll be watching Yuba so I can go chase walleye, northern pike, and any surviving rainbow. Hope to see you there. Keep the wind to your back!

I hope you can really get into those big Strippers, I hear they have a lot of those in Vegas- they tend to bite on lures that resemble dollar bills![Wink]

Where's your best chance of launching? Lindon?

All the open water must be on the north side of Utah Lake. I went over to Lincoln Beach today and it looks almost the same as it did when I was there a week and a half ago. Just a little open water south of the south dike, maybe two feet deep where it meets the ice. About 10 feet of open water out in front of the boat ramp. Drilled a hole across from the dock and the ice was about 9 inches thick, edges were a little soft. Then I went around the north side of west mountain and all the way back to Genola. No place with open water that went out farther than the bay south of the dikes. Ice covered the lake as far as you could see in all directions, clear out past bird island. Drilled another hole over on the west side of west mountain where I've been catching a few bluegill and it was also about 9 inches, didn't get any bites today. I took a picture that i'll post of the bay south of the dikes, but I don't know how well you can see the open water. There was also some open water out in the mouth of beer creek.

I am hoping for a wind, in the past the ice can be good in the early morning good for the brave at hart to ice fish on and gone by afternoon...

When ice brakes up it turns to kind of like sluch like ice with a watery milk like color some you can walk on but not most its called rotten ice and any wind or breeze will take it away...

was at american fork harbor this morning open at end of dike but the harbor is still iced over so no launching yet.

Lindon is open....

I think you may have a rough time actually getting anywhere if you plan on launching tomorrow, Cliff. Unless you just feel like going around Lindon with the trolling motor. I still stick with saying there's a good shot at being able to launch on Wednesday...

Just like I have been saying Lindon is open for about a mile to the north and a mile or more to the south and that far out in the lake and getting bigger all the time... ( open water baby OPEN WATER)[Image: fish-on.gif]

But we don't have a clear shot to the other side of the lake yet eh? Did you end up launching today and doing a little fishing?

I drove by again on the way to work this afternoon. There is open water from about 1/2 mile south of the bubble-up over to AF harbor. Af harbor is still iced up. There is open water outside to the east. There were six or seven vehicles fishing the shore at Lindon, and two boats outside of the marina.
