Lincoln beach is still iced so I decided to go to redmond this morning to give the northerns a whirl. Drove by Yuba and pulled into painted rocks to check on ice. I didn't go out on it, but the east end of Yuba is going to be awhile unless we get heavy winds. Near Fayette, the Sevier is pouring onto the ice and there is a decent expance of water open, but not where it is good fishing.
After all of the Tomfoolery, arrived at Redmond at noon. What a joy to see it ice free and rising. Rigged a minnow with a egg sinker and cast 25 feet out. Within 5 minutes of being there I caught a 25 inch northern. One half hour later I caught a 27 incher.
For the next two hours I had numerous hits, but I couldn't get a hook in them. One I am certain was a big fish. How big, I can only speculate. It took a lot of line and the drag was singing like the preachers wife. Suddenly the line went slack and that was that. When I reeled in the bait the anchovy looked like it had been fileted by the galloping gourmet, just the backbone and rib bones. Nice knife work by Mr. fat northern.
Before I got out of there a guy come by to shoot the breeze. He advised me he had just left Piute reservoir and that there was a lot of open water. He was casting onto the ice and then dragging the lure off the ice and WHAM LUCILLE he was fast to a big rainbow. According to this gentleman he caught 20 nice rainbow in the 2 to 3 pound class. I have no reason to doubt him. I might drive down Sunday to fish the afternoon, but first I will have to rationalize putting $150 worth of diesel in my truck to catch a bunch of fish that I will release.
I might note that I didn't release the northerns as they a great tablefare. If trout tasted as good as Northens, the monkey would have scratched their arse! Keep the wind to your back,
Here is a pic of the fish. I think I'll go back Sunday AM and see if I can catch something bigger,
