Lincoln beach is still iced so I decided to go to redmond this morning to give the northerns a whirl. Drove by Yuba and pulled into painted rocks to check on ice. I didn't go out on it, but the east end of Yuba is going to be awhile unless we get heavy winds. Near Fayette, the Sevier is pouring onto the ice and there is a decent expance of water open, but not where it is good fishing.

After all of the Tomfoolery, arrived at Redmond at noon. What a joy to see it ice free and rising. Rigged a minnow with a egg sinker and cast 25 feet out. Within 5 minutes of being there I caught a 25 inch northern. One half hour later I caught a 27 incher.

For the next two hours I had numerous hits, but I couldn't get a hook in them. One I am certain was a big fish. How big, I can only speculate. It took a lot of line and the drag was singing like the preachers wife. Suddenly the line went slack and that was that. When I reeled in the bait the anchovy looked like it had been fileted by the galloping gourmet, just the backbone and rib bones. Nice knife work by Mr. fat northern.

Before I got out of there a guy come by to shoot the breeze. He advised me he had just left Piute reservoir and that there was a lot of open water. He was casting onto the ice and then dragging the lure off the ice and WHAM LUCILLE he was fast to a big rainbow. According to this gentleman he caught 20 nice rainbow in the 2 to 3 pound class. I have no reason to doubt him. I might drive down Sunday to fish the afternoon, but first I will have to rationalize putting $150 worth of diesel in my truck to catch a bunch of fish that I will release.

I might note that I didn't release the northerns as they a great tablefare. If trout tasted as good as Northens, the monkey would have scratched their arse! Keep the wind to your back,

Here is a pic of the fish. I think I'll go back Sunday AM and see if I can catch something bigger,

Sounds like a good day. The guys success at Piute is a very commom occurence there. It is a fantastic rainbow fishery. I'm hoping to fish there more this spring targeting smallmouth.

I hit Redmond about a month ago and got skunked, only was there for about a 1/2 hour. Did the same technique as you did but had no patience or luck. I can fish for hours from a boat but only a few minutes from the shore [crazy]. Where is piute?

Piute is on highway 89 by the town of Junction- south of Marysvale. It's about 3 1/2 hours south of Salt Lake.

hell if you are going that far (3 1/2 hours) might as well make the trek down to Powell[Tongue]!!!

I might be told wrong but this is what i was told about the fish in redmond by my wifes grandpa who grew up there. The fish have high mercury or sulphur i cant remember which and since his stroke he does not remember much anymore. He always told me not to eat the pike there so i always catch and release them.Hopefully he is wrong . Someone will chime in eventually with more info i hope.

I'm not sure about the mercury levels in Redmond, but I look at it this way; I'm 62, smoked 2 packs of cigs for 50 years, drank enough whiskey to fill redmond, worked in the rank dusty mines and steel mills all of my life........I'm not the least bit concerned about a little mercury, but you young guys might wan't to be concerned.

My only concern right now is living one more year and filling my 2008 resolution which is; to catch every game fish specie in the state of Utah and to catch a marlin on a fly rod.

I'll be in my old stomping grounds at Zihuatanajo Mexico for 2 weeks in May after the marlin and the rest of the time in pursuit of the Utah species. I have only caught two specie so far in 2008, perch and northern because of the ice so I am very anxious for it to warm up so I can get after the other 20 or so other game fish before I have to pay the grim reaper his dues for a life time of wicked ways. Keep the wind to your back.[reply]

[cool][#0000ff]I have not seen anything definitive on the potential hazards of eating fish from Redmond either. But, I would tend to think that mercury was not one of the problems. The lake is fed by highly mineralized waters, and that supposedly affects the taste of the fish. I have heard several folks say that you can't even stand to eat the cats from that lake.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I'm like you. I have lived long enough and abused my poor old body enough (not a smoker) that I am past worrying about the POTENTIAL hazards of eating fish from questionable waters. I have become more philosophical than cynical. Some of your comments reminded me of an email "piece" I got a couple of days ago...George Carlin on Aging. I am attaching it below in case you have not read it.[/#0000ff]

Maybe true but Powell doesn't have 2-6 lb. rainbows, just those silly bass. J.K. guys. I am a trout guy though.
