Hookjaw and I headed up to Blacksmith Fork and poked around a bit. Went and looked at the elk at Hardware Ranch and then tried a little fishing on the river. We had a hard time just finding a place to park on the side of the road. Finally settled on a little pull-out with just enough room. Fished for about 45 mins before leaving. We each had one pretty good hit and that was all. (using rapalas) It just didn't seem like there were any fish in there. We only saw a handful of fish if that. We decided to head for the Ogden. Fished there for a couple hours. Hookjaw hooked a bunch, and I finally started hooking a couple when I switched my lure from a husky jerk to a pm spinner. It was a good time on the river. Here's something for you all...as we were moving up the river (about the time I started hooking the crap out of them) we noticed something in the water. We moved up a little and low and behold CORN! About 25 yds. of the river was totally covered in corn. It was on the banks and spread throughout the whole river. I'm not an expert, but it seems that some illegal chumming is going on here? Anybody know the laws on that one? Well, other than that it was a good day fishing.
I just looked at the pictures I posted, and I have turned the quality down too far. Pictures to come soon.

[cool][#0000ff]My guess is that someone is feeding waterfowl...not chumming for trout.[/#0000ff]

No chumming, no waterfowl food, it is for the moose that are living by the river. I talked with a good friends uncle that owns the cabin/house about half way and his neighbor has been doing it.[

So why does the corn have to be at the bottom of the river??? Why can't they put the corn out in the yard?
Something seems strange about all of this. I thought that there was something about corn being against the law or something. Also, is the corn going to disolve or what because it looks like a terrible polluted mess.

I would guess they just stop on the road and throw it out from the car. Not sure where you found it and where they are doing it. Maybe they have seen too many videos of moose eating under water. It is not illegal if they are not fishing or going to fish. If in fact they are just trying to feed the moose, they are not doing anything wrong. It will dissolve for sure but not sure how long. Is it the stretch of water with the moose that is bleding all over the snow? Is it hard corn?

It's behind a house, so it isn't even close to the road. Kinda right below someone's deck. I don't think this is the spot where the moose was hanging out because there wasn't a ton of sign and I saw the moose further down the canyon on the way up. Further...there was a crap load of corn. Not just a handful that someone threw out to feed a few fish, or a moose. If I was feeding a moose I would imagine more corn on the bank and not as much in the water. It looked like hard corn. I thought (and just a thought, don't know officially) that corn was against the law to fish with because the fish couldn't digest it or something. If this is the case I can't see it being any better for the fish hard or soft in such huge amounts. I did find about a 5 in brown that was dead in the water. Did he "choke" on the corn? Don't know, something just seems a little (pardon my pun) fishy here.
Not trying to start anything here, but I would guess if I came back in a year from now I might still see corn there. And I'm just hoping that this isn't creating a bad situation for the fish.

You are right. Corn is illegal to fish with. I am not backing anybody up on either side. I personally don't think it was a good idea to begin with. If memory serves, trout cannot digest corn hence the laws in UT. Maybe there is more to the story than i got. I will make a trip back up and ask some more questions.[

I have fished that stretch of the river too many times to count and I know for a fact that the guy that lives where the corn has been thrown out is a fisherman. In fact, when he sees fisherman getting close to the hole behind his house, he usually goes out and stands in the river with his pole so you can't pass him. He has also let the dog out on us a few times to try and scare us away.
The way that it was distributed seemed "fishy" to me. My thought is that he thought if he dumped corn all over in the hole behind his house, he would attract more fish and hence catch more fish. A lot of those people that own property next to the river think that the river is also thier property and they think they can do whatever they want.
Do you think that the DWR should be notified or not?

I know that part of the river. Got screamed at a few times also. But i kept on fishing he doesn't own the river nor the bottom of the river. Has long as your in the river no one can't say anything. Keep on fishing. I think he is doing it so no one will fish there. Or when you are fishing there he will call the fish and game and tell them some b.s. Just my 2 cents. If he lets his dog out on me i will kill it. Don't get me wrong i love dogs i hate the owners. Pineviewfisher

How do you know that he does not own the bottom of the river?

I couldn't find out any more info today. I say give them a call and see what they say. If the person/persons intent was to attract fish then they should be hit with the book. BTW, caught 22 fish today on nymphs and dries resembling corn. LMAO Let me know what they say.

Wrong. It is a sick fact that people in Ut CAN and DO own the river beds. Just not sure if the people in ogden canyon have ownership or not. They sure post it like they do.[mad]
I think it is funny when i float past this arrogant sucker(edited for content) on a stretch of the weber and he watches me float by and can't do anything about it.[

I gave the DWR a call and they said said that putting that much corn in the river is considered littering. The also said that the smaller fish can't digest it and will sometimes die off.
DWR said they would head up there and give them a good talking to. They will probably get ticketed for Chumming and littering.
As for ownership of the river, I usually don't worry about trespassing unless it is posted. If someone tells me that they own the bed of the river I will just leave. I have never had a problem at all.

That is the best way to handle it. Just leave and be done with it. Some people push the envelope and start trouble. Those are the people that ruin it for the rest of us.

Umm, I have always thought that if your in the water they can't say anything. But who knows that law it is always in the paper about the weber. I usually keep on fishing. until a fish and game warden tells me other wise. the legislature should clear up that law. So everyone will understand. When people start yelling at me about trespassing in the rivers i usually ignore them. When your in the river standing on a rock that is pretruding does that count from being on the bottom? Thanks for clearing this up for me. Everyone as good answer to my stupid question. Pineviewfisher

It gets so rediculous that for instance you are hunting ducks with decoys, your decoy anchors are tresspassing and you can be cited. In ID there is a public right of way around all obstacles. Welcome to our lovely state.[

Nah. No one tells me where I can and can not fish. Well...except the state of Utah.

ATTENTION....I own the property you claim that I am chumming. WRONG.... The corn you have seen in the river and by the river is to feed the ducks, muskrats, beaver, squirrels and any other thing that wants to eat. I spend two to three thousand dollars per year to feed any and all animals and birds that choose to grace me with their presence. As for you hookjaw....You are a liar. I have NEVER blocked or tried to stop any good fisherman from having a perfect day doing the finest thing a person can do. My dog comes out to watch because he loves to watch people fishing. He gets mad at me if I keep one. The only people that I have a problem with is the trashers. These are the so called fishermen that throw their garbage in the river and onto peoples property. If you paid more attention to what was actually going on rather than spouting off on things you have no clue about the world would be a better place. This winter I was putting out 50# of corn a day to feed the waterfowl and 50# a week to feed all the birds, squirrels, racoons ect. If you don't like TOUGH. don't come there. Welcome to all the ligit sportsmen and sportswomen of the world. I have never and will never stop someone from fishing on my property as long as you have the respect and decency that all people deserve.
