Friday when I was fishing redmond, a guy showed up and told me he had been fishing Piute earlier that day and had done exceptionally well on big rainbows. Sunday, I decided to try it as he stated that there was open water along the shoreline.

It's a two hour drive from Utah county so I didn't get there until noon. When I pulled into the state park there were several anglers fishing from shore. Most reported slow fishing but a few were being caught.

My brother-in-law and myself set up on the shoreline SW of the launch area lamenting the fact that we didn't bring a boat as there was plenty of open water to fish, even troll.

Piute has rainbow, cutts, browns and smallmouth along with chubs, suckers and carp.

The rainbow fishery is what makes the average anglers bum hum. It is not uncommon to catch 5 pound rainbow here. The fish we caught averaged about 2.5 lbs. 18' length and fat. The rainbow are spawing now and I don't know how they would be to eat.

The bait fishermen were using powerbait, Yellow w/sparkle and rainbow or green w/sparkle were the hot items. Other anglers told us that night crawlers w/marshmellows was working well. All of the bait anglers we talked to were fishing on the bottom with a cast-a-bubble or egg sinker and a 3 foot leader.

Lure fishermen were using a black Jakes with spots or a silver krocadile. A few days ago you could cast onto the ice then pull it off the ice into the maw of a big rainbow, but now the ice is too far off the shore to reach it. Attila the hun couln't cast to the ice with a rocket launcher now.

I suspect that one could catch a female rainbow and take her eggs and put them into an egg sack made from an old panty hose and slaughter the cruising trout. Sportsmens and Cabelas sell the nylon accesories to make an egg sack if your wife or girl friend won't give you her panty hose. I got my face slapped and called a pervert when I asked my neighbor for hers. My wife wasn't exactly estatic when she found out and I'm still laying low every time I see the neighbors husband get home from work. Let's see....back to fishing.

It is now our plan to take the boat down next week end. The reservoir should be almost totally ice free my then. We will be fishing the rip rap near the dam for smallmouths and trolling for trout with RMT spoons.

If cabin fever is making you crazy and you need an open water fix, Piute might be the palce for you. Keep the wind to your back.

I fished Piute with my dad on Saturday and did quite well. We fished on the south end by the cottonwood trees just north of the rocky ledges. He caught some nice hook-jaw males on nightcrawlers and powerbait. I caught some fatty mommas with an olive wooly bugger behing a bubble and also a silver kastmaster. Like you, we weren't sure how much open water there was, we just heard that it was fishable from the shore. After watching the fish jump just out of casting range i was wishing i would have brought my float tube and fly rod along.

Have you ever fished it for smallmouth? Caught a brown or cutthroat? If so, can you let me know the details. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks. Keep the wind to your back.

Hey Pez, I have fished it and never caught a Brown, Cut, or Smallie. Just nice Bows. It looks like its time for another trip down south. Thanks for the update.

I have caught smallmouth there but everyone has been by chance. I have never targeted them but if I were to do so, I would probably use a crawfish imitating lure along the riprap. I don't know if their numbers are that great to be able to catch them consistently yet. But I might be wrong. I have never caught a cutthroat but my little brother caught a brown on powerbait a few years ago. Mostly just rainbows.

Sounds like a great trip. Never fished down that way, but sounds like a great place to be.

even without the cutthroat, browns and smallmouths it is an excellent fishery. As I mentioned, our plan is to fish the rip rap around the dam tghrowing lures, crawdad imitations as suggested. Browns will be sought at night along any rocky areas we can find trolling RMT spoons and rapalas tight too the bank ala Ray Johnsons brown technique. Rainbows should be easy this close to ice off.

The only thing that will make me change plans is for Yuba to thaw out before the week-end. Thursday or Friday will be spent at the sportsmens show. I'm hopeing that Jared johnson at Rocky Mountain tackle will have some new tackle to sell that I can use over the week-end,

Whatever happens, I'll post a report when I return. Keep the wind to your back.

Im itching for some open water as well. The boat is ready to stretch its legs. Sounds like Piute or maybe Yuba are my only choices, I might be going south. So there are browns in piute then? They are my favorite trout to catch![Wink]

Greenish-clear 1 1/2 inch tube jigs with 1/16 ounce heads work well for me there. I have only caught the bows, but have heard of 4lb smallies being caught.

Great news !! Man if the weather holds up i am there!!!!!!! Been there once ice fishing but never in open water. So is there really enough open water for trolling? Man you got me excited!! [Wink]

There won't be enough ice on Piute by the week-end to chill a drink.

Are the launching docks in the water yet?

I will probably head to Piute one these first nights after work to see about the ice (and wet a line of course). If not, I work with a lady from Junction so I will find out if launching is possible for sure. It would be terrible if someone pulled their boat down and wasn't able to launch and troll.

The docks are not in the water. I truly believe the reservoir will be ice free by the week-end. The only thing I can tell you is that we are headed down saturday and there is going to be a boat behind our truck and we aren't taking it to make the girls oohh and aahh. We are going to fish.

Now if there is a horrendous South wind it might pile the ice up around the state park and the launch ramp might be ice bound. What is the likelihood of that? Slim and none. Get your boat ready.

My boat is comming out of hibernation for a weekend trip there! I cant wait to get into some fish from the boat. Ice fishing is a nice cabin fever cure but give me softwater any day!

Awesome looks like it will be either Piute or otter creek for this sunday thanks for making my day !!

I'm going to put my boat on Piute in the morning. I don't really like to launch where there are no docks, but what's a guy to do? I'm hoping to find a smallie or two or fifty.

Please let us know how you do and what was working for you. Keep the wind to you rback.
