Hunters harvested 585 wild turkeys in 57 of 74 counties open to turkey hunting during Indiana's third modern-day fall wild turkey hunting season, held from Oct. 1-21, 2007.
Counties harvesting at least 25 birds were Warrick, Clark, Switzerland, Harrison, Pike, and Jackson counties.
The archery-only portion of the season occurred from Oct. 1-16 in 74 counties. The combined shotgun and archery portion occurred from Oct. 17-21. Shotgun hunting was limited to 26 counties in the south-central and southeast regions of the state.
Hunters harvested 150 birds (26 percent) during the archery-only portion of the season, and 435 birds (74 percent) during the combined shotgun and archery portion. Archers harvested 216 birds (37 percent), while shotgun hunters took 369 birds (63 percent).
The 2007 fall harvest was 9.4 percent less than the 646 turkeys taken during the 2006 fall turkey season, and 18.3 percent less than the 716 turkeys taken during the first fall season in 2005.
Comprehensive lifetime license holders harvested 49 percent of the birds, followed by resident fall turkey license holders at 22 percent, and 9 percent of the harvest was taken by license exempt landowners and active military personnel on leave.
