We made it to Bullfrog Friday afternoon. The weather is great. The boat fired up and ran perfect. The water temp in the bay was 54' at best. We had one hook up on the tire line around the house boats. The Bass prefish fleet was here. Today it is our Quest for Stripers. Will try to post this evening when we get back. Any one have any advice on that Quest pipe in. Thanks RF

Head up to the Moki wall w/ some chovies, find a school and chum a bit to keep them around. Drop chunks of chovie on 1/4 onz. heads that should get a few. Try the same thing @ the mouth of lake canyon. I've heard there has been a few there also. Then go to the back of lake canyon and troll deep diving husky jerks @ about 2-2.5 mph. Good luck.

Good to hear you made it down there safely and the boat ran good. Sounds like Willard is all but ice free now, too bad it didn't happen last weekend. Did you read Dubob's reply about staying at the lodge down there and is in a Ranger boat? Good luck Dan, hope you find some willing fish.

we donereal well last year at this time, in mokie about a quarter mile in on left side is a large crack coming down the rock face, anchor chum and throw towards crack.

It was slow and not as warm today as we needed. We got three all day. There was 4 other boats working Moki hard and they were frustrated also. We are going up lake to try to find warmer water. The water is colder in the clearer mid section. anywhere there is color the water is a couple degrees warmer. With warmer weather we hope the fish will turn on. The black bass fisherman are having some success. Well got to rest big day tomorrow for a long run up lake. RF

We did really good last year at the moki wall. Dont chum by throwing pieces of chovies in the water you are just feeding the fish. They will eat and move on. This is what i always do and it works and keeps the fish under the boat. I use a mesh bag and put the chovies in there all mashed up and shake the bag every so often so let out a chum slick. The fish smell the chovies and stay around the boat looking for them.Keep baits in several depths till you find out were they are hanging out at.I freeline a piece of chovie or any bait like chub, red shiners and they will eat them.Hope this helps ya .[

Hope you have a better day today, how far up lake are you going? What are daytime air temps getting up to down there?

We went all the way to the top of Good Hope Bay. The water was 53'. We got 5 Stripers trolling shad jointed rapallas. Went to the north shore and found warmer water and a walleye and a crappie. We are going to try to hit the warmest water we can tomorrow. We are not graphing the numbers of fish we did last year. Moki did not produce well today for some fishermen. I agree there has been a die off of some year class fish. But we saw lots of large shad jumping and flipping on the surface at Good Hope. The walleye was fat and all but one of the stripers from up there was in good shape. I dare to say the lake is in flux. 2 weeks of warm weather and the whole thing will turn on. We worked some bass gear today but had no luck. We have seen lots of bass of both mouths. Two more days.. Whao who!!!!!

Sounds like you did pretty good considering how cold the water is. How far is the boat ride up to Good Hope? Was there any size to the stripers you caught? Good luck today, hope you find more willing fish.

I am wanting to go to powell for my first time i have a little fish/ski boat that is 18' should i be worried about it i heard that the little boats have a hard time there

If the weather is nice an 18' boat should be fine, just be careful not to overload the boat and stay out of the main channel if it gets choppy
I was in a 16' boat one year in a nasty storm with 5 guys and our stuff, we started getting water over the bow, scared me pretty bad, we beat it to a side canyon and waited out the storm. That sucked.
One year my dad and a friend took a canoe with a trolling motor from wahweap several miles up the lake to fish. His battery died and they paddled a long way home, luckily the weather was fine and they did okay. But looking back... that was a bad idea...
I think most the rental boats at Powell are 18 footers. They're all over the place down there so you'll do alright. If I had an 18 foot boat, Id be there every weekend! Good luck!

Hey it got really warm down here. We went into halls and fished all the way back to the flooded trees. I lost at the boat one of the best LMB I have had in a while. We caught one striper. Fished Bullfrog later in the afternoon. Still nothing. The water hit 57' in places today. The fish are just not there yet. I hate it when I am the only one at the fish cleaning station. Last year we had to wait in line. I think we are going back to Good Hope Bay in the morning. Its a 20 mile run but it is just fishier up there. More shad and more birds around that feed on fish. More fish jumping and more on the graph on the fish finder. Well got to go. Pretty sun burnt. Sometimes the sunscreen isnt enough. RF

Well today was another blue bird day. We made the run back to Good hope bay. It was like sliding up a mirror with the rock reflecting on the water. We got on the sun screen early. We caught the first fish right off the bat and got a couple more then they quit. We changed out lures, chummed and went through the usual and managed a walleye. We moved to a cove and picked up another striper. right away. Then again tried everything to no avail. Ran back to Bullfrog. The back of the bay has been producing stripers. We got two more right away then that was it. We got out with a nice foot long crappie, a twenty inch walleye and six sub twenty inch stripers. The fish were all in really good shape. The walleye had some kind of minnows in its gut. we graphed lots of fish up there. some places it blacks out the screen. But I dare say the 100+ stripers a day times are over for a while. But the black bass and walleyes are going to rock. I wish I could just live here but I cant. We are not ready yet. I will look forward to reading about this down here to see what the out come of the stripers is. Also the crappie we cut had not spawned yet. There is another great fish that will get good recruitment with the stripers being off. It will be an interesting time for this lake. Long drive tomorrow. Later.....RF

Sounds like it was a fun trip but a little slow in the catching department. It might be a good idea to make next years trip a couple of weeks later[
]. Thanks the daily reports Dan. I'm back on swings now, talk to you in the morning.

We got back ok. The run through Price is an hour faster. Gas is 3.50 at Hanksville and Bullfrog. The night was warm and the day warmer so the water is coming up fast. Just thinking of some notes for folks going there.....Hmmm. Have a plan B for black bass in case the stripers are really down and out. Jointed shad and wally divers in white still caught the best fish. Let see ah the crappie have not spawned yet. They will hit a loud colored rapalla or crank bait. Then go back and hit them. I think they will really get with it in a week or two up north at Good Hope. In the sun bathed coves of the north shore. Bring a long extension cord if you need power for your battery charger. Maybe consider moving our into the main marking lot when your charger is done. Seemed a little short on outlets. I only needed every other day so it was easy to get to the juice but if you needed it every day you would need to get back early or gang up on a generator. Dont forget to go back into Bullfrog bay and Halls at that warmer shallow water has lots of feed in it and the bigger fish are there looking for something to eat. It wouldnt be too hard to talk me into going back in a few weeks for some split on gas and a place to stay. Later RF
