Well my buddy and I decided since we had the smell of skunk on us from last week up at Newton that we would give Pineview a try today. Made it through the canyon just in time since they closed it @ 8 am till 4 pm for some "work". Had the boat in the water by 8:15 and off we went. I am not really familiar with Pineview (fished about 6 times) so we started North East and worked and worked and worked for a couple hours. It was nice to finally get some bites but to make a long story short we got malested by the skunk again!!![mad] Oh well, it was nice to get the boat out and not be at work. The wind picked up around 10:30 ish and pretty much blew us off the lake, not before we watched a guy wading in the water just off shore on Cemetery Point hook a bigun. He laid it out in the sand (sorry LunkerHunter2 had nothing to do with it [crazy]) and measured it out at 40 inches on the dot, she was a "toad" that is for sure but that was the most action we saw for the day other than a guy and his "bikini clad" wife chopping up the ice in the Narrows with their boat!!! Quick question for you boat mechanics, what would you think is wrong when you turn the key to your motor and nothing happens but you here it "clicking" like it wants to start but just doesnt. This has happened a couple times to me before. I turn the key and nothing so I turn turn turn and turn then it finally cranks up. Any suggestions? I thought maybe corrosion on the battery but I cleaned them pretty good. Anyway, one more week of work than on leave for two weeks, one week fishing around here and Idaho and one week at Powell, so I better get this skunk smell off of me before then!!!

TS hey sounds like a bad connection somewhere. I would start with the battery cables and check all the terminals in the system for corrosion and security. Last but not least the contacts in the starter itself could be bad and that would be a real bummer down there on Powell. The starter is only as good as the last time it cranked up the engine if it is the problem. Too bad about the skunkin on PV. Need just some more warm weather. Good luck andk Keep us posted on how it goes at Powell. After im healed up here I may have to go back down there and redeem myself of that beating we took in March.

That was you I talked to huh? I was out of my mind excited, as you could probably gather. I did as much as I could to keep that fish safe, but by myself I couldn't get a good measurement and pic right in the water for fear it would swim off, so I layed it in the wet sand. My first guess in the heat of the moment after just putting the tape down was 40 inches, but after looking at the pics again its a solid 42 inches. See my other post.

Yeah that is what I figured. Why would it act like that first thing in the morning and as soon as it gets started I can shut her down and she will start back up then shut her down and she will start back up again. It is almost like it (starter or whatever is wrong) need to warm up!!! Guess I will have to do some searching. I know when it happened to me the first time I took the cover off and noticed the little sprocket that rises and contacts the big one would actually rise but the motor wouldnt turn over, still sound like what you said? Thanks for the info.

[left]Ditto. Its funny how people on this site seem to meet out and about. And yeah, that catch was a battle for sure! Pulled like a giant carp and jumped like a rainbow. Those Tiger Muskies are awesome fish!

Sorry about the skunk. I got skunked last time I went out too so I can sympathize. As far as your boat. It depends on your setup and which engine. Connections could be it, could be a dead spot on your starter, could be a solenoid.
If I were a betting man, I'd bet it was a dead spot on your starter, specially since you said you've already checked the connections. Most starters have the solenoid built right inside them, older ford engines dont, but most will, so even if it's the solenoid, a lot of times it's best to just replace the whole thing anyways, it's not too much more to go that route. If you give me specifics on your boat/engine I can be less general with my comments.

ill take a look at your boat when i get out there. im going to say without talking to you to look at the most obvious problem for your answer. also check your connects to your starter and all grounds. you might have a ground comming lose. sure am glad you got skunked and hope it keeps up during the powell trip!

Starter solenoid, $35 at dicks in clearfield. Same thing was wrong with my boat.[

[#500000]I had the same problem.....I checked the connections and that wasn't the problem.....I then took the starter motor off and took it into Chics Armature in Ogden and they rebuilt it ...Good as new. [/#500000]

[#500000]This was a couple of years back, but I believe it was about forty bucks.....It was a starter on a Merc black max 175 HP.....Give them a call, they could probably give you a quote.[/#500000]

Dude if you can't change a starter than you need to crosstrain to Finance. It's good to see your leaving some fish for us. Less than 30 days left in this hole.

Didnt say I couldnt do it just never have before. Look whos talking, you cant even keep a battery charged tough guy!!![
] Yeah, I am getting kind of anxious for you guys to get home......wait a minute NO......the anxiousness is or my upcoming Lake Powell trip you guys are on the back burner!!![:p] Just kiddin!!! Anyhow, stay safe and we'll see you in about a month.

If you haven't fixed your boat yet, you may try checking your battery for a weak or bad cell. They'll lose just enough juice to make starting the first time troublesome and then once the alternator tops it off, they work fine.

What was the water temperature on Pineview? Went to Mantua 4/18 and the water was around 50 degrees (only caught a couple of rainbows). I would imagine Pineview is colder but am curious about how much.

It was a cool 43.8 when we got on around 8 and warmed up all the way to 48 before the w--- started to blow, but that was in some of the little coves and shallower water. I am going to brave whatever kind of weather we have tomorrow and make another trip up there, maybe I should go to Mantua huh? How was the water level there?
