I went in Sportsman's , Riverdale, Utah to get some 9ft.5x leaders and they didnt have any. They had very few leaders and they would put the leaders that nobody buys in the vacent rack opening to make them look not empty. I also tried to buy Seirra bullets, no bullets. Whats going on.

Good question. I do know that big chain stores have to order in bulk (not like the little stores that can order one or two items) and the item has to be in there inventory list.
I know the Sportsmen's here in Sandy is out of popular items on a regular basis.
Or it could be the managers, but anything is possible.

I went to sportsmans in Riverdale 3 times over a 2 months period to get 9ft 4x leader and they never had any. I stopped looking there

Why don't you shop at anglers den. they have better product and more of it.

I agree Pappasguide.

Some stores do inventory in Jan, some at the end of the 1st quarter in April. They let inventory run down so that they don't have to pay so much taxes on the ivnentory they are holding.
Yes, our government taxes the store on the inventory they are holding, then they tax you and me for buying it, this is after they tax the producer for making it and taxing all of the employees involved from the factory worker to the truck driver. Not to mention that we are buying the item with the meager amount left over after we pay taxes on what we earned.

Rant is now over, everyone go fishing.

Utah is a Freport state . No tax on inventory. It was just as bad before end of year.

I would shop more at anglers den, although i just can't afford thier prices...I sure miss hooked shop...come on James get er' goin again...please....

sportsmans buys second rate product. everything that they sell sucks. we need to support the small shops that have better product and more of it. sportsmans is the walmart of of the outdoors. sportsmans is closing stores down all overthe U.S.

I'm not a big Sportsmans fan anymore these days, but this just isn't true. Sure, their customer service is poor at times, but they sell a decent product. The majority of the stuff you can buy at shops or anywhere else you can get the exact same thing at Sportmans. Cortland 444 is the same at Sportsmans as it is Angler's Den. Same with a Ross reel. It's a Ross no matter where you buy it. Tippets, tying material, rods, reels, etc, etc, etc.....they carry the exact same brands as most places. I was disappointed to find out the only top of the line fly line they carry is in Cortland. Cortland line isn't bad, I just like to have options. And when I was looking for Rio Grand or Rio Gold......I couldn't find what I was looking for.

I too avoid the local shops for most things because they charge more for the exact same product. Same brand and everything. It is about bottom line. I want to save money just as much as they want to make money. We will each look out for our own interests. But there are certain things I go to shops to get.

the rods reel and lines are the same. check the prices its the same. when i buy materials for my shop they ask if you want high or low quality materials. if you bitch about prices mybe you shouldn't be fishing.

I totally disagree. It is not second rate. They carry the same top of the line stuff as Cabela's. I do agree on the line however, I prefer AirFlo and Rio, but minor as I only buy line once in awhile. Their fly tying supplies are good. I also buy preferred specialty items from the Fly Desk, but they got a good supply of material for quick pick ups.
Where do you come up with Second Rate items?
[signature]
have you ever tied profeconally. probubly not. well i have to have the best product. sportsmans does not carry good fly tying materials. every hackle i got was so old i had to take it back. if i need somthing i order it throw anglers den or my shop in west. cabela's is a big wal-mart for redneck that isn't worth a ____
[signature]
if your a guide why would you support sportsmans? cabela's and sportsmans run all the little shops out of bizness and i loss my job guiding.

Let your hostilities out somewhere else my man. Try to keep it clean for those of us that don't want to wade through the filth.

Have "I" ever tied professionally? Your kidding right[laugh]
As far as guiding, the two have never been a problem. Oh I guided for an Orvis endorsed Lodge, but the local store closed it's doors, and definitely not cause of Sportsman's and Cabela's hadn't opened.
I am not saying the small shops are not the best for that specialty item, in fact Fish Tech is my home away from home and really special goods would be the Fly Desk. But I still don't think SW merchandise is seconds. It is great for bulk on many items at a good price. In fact I think of SW as more like Orvis in that they cater to more than just Fly Fishing.

well don't argue with someone that works in the fishing industry. i know what i'm talking about.

the rep that sell to anglers den is not the same a sw. he would love to see sw go out on biz because the shops he supports are going out of biz due to the low end product that sw sell. i have seen good friend go work for sw and get quit because they are not selling good product. i ty over 3000 flies a year. the product that sw sell will not work for me or good tyers. the cdc they sell is worthless. i have to order it from trouthunters in idaho.
