Went out first thing this morning the surface temp was down to 50 degrees. Last sunday it was near 56 degrees. The Wiper action was slow all morning until about 11:00 am. Then the swithch was flipped. I only ended up getting 3 fish in the boat but I had probly a dozen or so hook just for a minute. I had way to small of a hook on! But I was using a maniac 3" minnow in the chartruse holographic, white 1/8 ounce head. I usally use a orange head but the white seemed to do the trick this time. The fish were close to shore 2 to five feet of water. Wiper season is here!! Unless you like to troll then you'll have to wait for warmer water.

Oohh, near shore! That's for me! (not only do I not own a boat, I'm rather terrified on being one at all)
Hopefully I can get out next week.
What size hook should I use (only have those huge catfish kind right now), and bait? Or jigs... I have a couple of those! (don't ask me what kind, though... one is a little white fishy, and another is a little green/gray fishie!)

Jigs are some of the most productive lures you can own. They are versitile. (fish shallow, mid-depth, deep) they can be tipped with Plastic fishy things, rubber worms, real worms or dead minnows. They come in hundreds of colors, several shapes and with or without a spinner blade (Road-runner style).
They can can be fished plain or under a bobber.
They are cheap, I don't hesitate to break off a $.30 jighead, I'll swim for a pointer and will wade for a Rapala.
If you save up a little you can buy a jig kit with a bunch of jigs and plastics. They are cheaper by the dozen. I buy Road-runners from Cabela's for $10 a pack of 20. I also bought a 200 piece jig kit for $30. That works out to about $.14 each jig. Less than what you would pay for some hooks.

nice report skeeter,I 'm going to pull the boat out of storage today and get it ready to go. Do you have to order the manics on-line or can you buy them at sportmans.I have good success with small rapalas this time of year but you always seem to do better with the manic jigs,I need to try them out. thanks for any info
