so was out today using dries for the first time. had the right fly and size, cause they kept trying to eat it.LOTS of TIMES. was a size 18 blue dunn. was from shore at vernon resivour. I couldnt hook not one fish. I would try to set the hook when i saw it in their mouth. used a gentle pull with my stripping hand and raised the rod tip up gentle like. The cast was only bout 30ft out. pretty frustrating. any ideas on what I was doing wrong? will be greatful for any and all comments. Damn trout anyways.
thanks

That happens....Next time try a dropper about 18" down. I notice a lot of times fish will hit the dry, then go down for the dropper. Try like a WD40 or an emerger.
I want to get out there some time. About how far is it from S.L.?

vernon is about 2 hours from the salty city. go through Tooele and just stay southbound on sr 36. when you come to the town of vernon, bout 1/4 mile past the one and only gas station look for a sign that says vernon creek/ benmore. turn right there and go til you have to turn left or right. turn left and go til you come to the water. It is deepest by the dam and you can launch toons and tubes anywhere. (maybe a floating get together?) The fishing is pretty good most days. no services but there are restrooms. electric motors is ok ,no gas engines of any type. The only trees are on the west side so there is not much shade. I love vernnon. good place for family fun.

I forgot to say that there is a fence all the way around the water at vernon. This is a good thing . keeps the cowpies to a fair distance from the water. There is several gates but it maybe trickey getting the toons through them. I just have the boss help me lift mine over the wire. if Im alone I inflate again once through the gate. tubes aren't a problem to get through the gates inflated.[

So I take it you have fished there a few times??
What kind/size fish do they have there?

vernon has rainbows and browns. size range from planter rainbows to 18in browns. my wife caught a 18 in brown there last year and booy is she hooked. now she thinks she should go everytime i do.LOL actually she is my besst fishing buddy.Im lucky to have a gal that likes to fish. I have never caught any type of trash fish at vernon. wonder what "trash fish" means. there are also lots of places to ride 4wheelers there also.

So in theory the fish turns away from you after taking the dry to check on the nymph which causes the hook to set in the corner of its mouth instead of popping out the front. Nice!!!

The most common reason for beginner (and experienced) fisherman missing on dry flies is pulling the fly out of their mouth before the fish actually takes it. A good rule of thumb (not universal, but will help you get the hang of it) is to count "one one-thousand" once you see the fish "take" your fly off the top. That will give the fish tie to actually take it and not just nose your fly.
The fish on the Green are infamous for "nosing" your fly. They come up and push it, but don't take it fully at first. Patience is the key with dry fly fishing.
