I got a new rod and reel combo. It's a spinning reel with 8lb line. How do I string it? I know the line goes through the holes on the rod (I figured that out all by myself) but how do I use the reel? I can't find where the line is actually spun on or off by the spinning part?
thanks

I tried again last night and I pull the line through the holes on the rod, but if I spin the reel it just spins. Do I run the line around the outside of the bale somehow?

What I would recomend is that you take your rod and reel down to a sporting goods store like Sportsman's Warehouse or Joes or whatever is local and for the price of the line they will spool it on for you. Watch how they do it if you want to do it yourself next time. It is not that difficult once you figure it out...LOL

yeah. It's already on the spool. I can't figure out how to get it off the spool and able to be used. I feel so stupid. I pull the string off and through the holes and the reel just spins and spins. Has no interaction with the line at all.

I am sorry, but without seeing what is going on I can not be sure how to help you. I do know that more than one of my reels has a lever/switch on it to make it "free-wheel" and that could be the problem. Or it could be that the drag is so loose that it is just not stopping the line coming off.
I still have the same answer for you...go to one of the sporting goods stores in your area, maybe where you bought it, unless you got it at Wal-Mart or K-Mart.
There is no shame in being a rookie! Just tell them you have no idea what you are doing and ask them to show you how your reel works and how to adjust the drag and make sure you understand what all the adjustments are. Most of those guys are real willing to help out.
It may help others on the site to be able to help you if you list the make and model/model number of the reel.
And by the way...Wecome to the site!

I'm not really sure what make it is. :-) I bought it at Dicks. It's orange and says "the Edge" on the rod. I know that isn't much help. It's a spinning combo with 2 piece rod. the reel has front drag and it does have the free wheel on it. I just can't see how the spinning part interacts with the line. the line looks like it just goes straight off and through the holes while the bale spins around it. I know the spinning part has to interact with the line somehow. I might try taking it to the store this weekend. It's race weekend, so it will be hectic.
Thanks for you help

[#000000]Hey rw02kr43,[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]Could you look at your combo and read what it says on the rod and also on the reel ?[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]A little more info here and I can probably assist you with what you want.[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]You got it at Dicks sporting goods ... Right ?[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]

[#000000]Without knowing exactly what you have, Here are my thoughts ...
It sounds like you have one of these reels:
[inline 270px-Fishing_reel_svg.png][/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]Is that correct ? If so, continue ...[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]A. To string up your combo, Flip up the bail (#1 in photo above)[/#000000]
[#000000]B. Take the line and string it up the rod through the rod eyes until it goes through all of them and comes out the tip top one.[/#000000]
[#000000]C. Flip down the bail (#1 in the photo above)[/#000000]
[#000000]D. Turn the handle clockwise(#4 in the photo above)[/#000000]
[#000000]Now does the line return to the reel spool(#8 in the photo above) ? If so, you are set. Go ahead and do it again to set up the combo for fishing.[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]Feel free to ask any questions you may have.[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]Hope that helped.

Thanks. that is the type of reel I have. I don't see the combo at all on the Dick's website. I also have the ladyfish combo that I bought for my wife. I'll try it again tonight. So pretty much I just run the line up the pole and then turning the handle makes it reel in. I don't have to wrap it around the bail or anything like that?

[#000000]If you follow the instructions I wrote, you will notice that in step A you flipped up the Bail, then in step C you flipped in down again. In between those two steps, you took the line and pulled some of it off the reel and strung it up the rod. When you flipped the Bail back down in step C, that should have positioned the line correctly under the Bail. [/#000000]
Did that make sense ?

yep it does. I don't think I flipped it last time. I just pulled it up through the holes. I'll try again tonight after mowing.
Thanks for your help

no I really couldn't figure it out. I have done it a few times now with no problems. I still can't catch anything, but at least I know how to get line on the reel and to cast now. Whoooo hooo. Now where are those fish?

I don't mean to be mean here, but this is about the most funny thread I have read here on BFT![laugh]
I'm glad you figured out how to work your rod and reel, but that's the easy part! People are pretty friendly here so utilize the resource!
Good luck out there fishing. And remember catching fish isn't the only reason to go fishing. Enjoy your time outside!
