[cool][#0000ff]In one of our currently running threads, on Pelican Lake, there is a question as to whether or not the carp have ever been eradicated through treatment.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I sent inquiries to several DWR folks, and this is the reply I got back from Ed Johnson, the longtime DWR biologist for the "basin".[/#0000ff]

"There actually was a recent increase in the number of carp in Pelican from the draining of Cottonwood Reservoir. As you know, carp have been in Pelican for over 30 years and have not established a viable population. The majority of the carp in Pelican come down the Ouray Park Canal. As long as the population of bluegill and bass in Pelican stays high, juvenile carp are consumed early in life. I do not see young carp in Pelican Lake sampling. The carp from Cottonwood will pass out of the system in a few years and I see no long term impacts to the Pelican Lake fishery.

And just so there is no question: Pelican Lake has NEVER been treated with rotenone or any other fish toxicant. The lake was almost fishless 20 years ago due to drawdown of the water level and the subsequent winter kills."

Interesting. That report sounds similar to Bear Lake. There are a few carp around the Bear Lake State Park marina, but I don't see huge numbers of them around the lake.

Thats good to know, I thought that it had ben treated back when... I know the bass clubs helped to catch bass and gills to go back in Pelican after the kill....

Good deal. Thought for a moment there I was goin bonkers. Wait. I already am. lol That was driving me even more nuts though. I knew the winter kill was from about when I was born. Guess I knew right for once Tongue
