My brother and I fished Henry's on Sunday and had a great time. The action was steady and the fish were extremely healthy. We presented large dark crystal buggers/zonkers with type II intermediate sinking line in fairly shallow water (3-8 feet) along the shore. In about 5 hours of fishing we each boated 15-17 fish, mostly hybrids and a few cutthroats, the smallest being about 17 inches and the largest 26 inches and quite hefty. I have attached a few photos. Surprisingly, the weather turned out to be quite nice on Sunday afternoon. Hope everyone that fished had as good of a day as we did. [Smile]

Great Report. I am glad that you got some good pictures. I was in a toon on Sat. so I did not get any pics. It sound like you experienced the same thing that I did. I was using a type II line in 4-6ft of water. I ended up catching 28 cutts most of them were in the 16-18 range. 4 of them reached the 22" mark. Overall it was a great day.

I took my kids back to the combat zone (county boat dock) on Mon. so that they could catch some of the large cutts that were staging there. The fishing was a little slower on Mon, but we ended up getting 10 and the kids had a great time reeling in some better than average fish. I will try to post some pics after I figure out how to get them off of my new camera.

I talked to many people who fished various spots on Henrys and they all said it was the best opener in recent memory.

Any giants being landed?

I heard of several 10+ pounders, several of them are on this website: http://www.wildroseranch.com/Fishing/fishing.htm

13 Pounds is the biggest I've heard so far. We didn't get into any of those pigs, but I was quite satisfied with 6 or 7 fish in the 5-8 pound range.

Windriver, sounds like we were in the same vicinity as you. Good to hear you had a good time. I look forward to seeing some pictures

I am assuming you were using Type II AND Intermediate[Wink]
Can you repost the last two pictures. For some reason the little icons at the bottom are blocking them. I want to see you 26". I LOVE IT.

I am heading up there this weekend, I have only been up there once so not real familiar with it, what were you catching them on, and where you were at. Any info would be great. I will have my toon as well w/ the fly rod. thanks.

While several of our friends went farther north for the big opening at Henry's we stopped about half way at another Idaho lake. I call this lake Chironomid Heaven cause they WORK. It is deeper lake with 50 to 60' at deeper points. I generally fish the 20' mark.
We got there Sat. morning and set up camp. Got out on the water with instant action. I fished mainly the deep nymph 20' leader with a chironomid at the bottom and one three feet up.
We caught well over 60 fish each with 2 to 3 hour outings before weather changed. Monday rained all day with gust of wind, but turned out that shore fishing was working just as well.
All fish very healthy with a16" to 24" being the normal (nothing under 16")
Here is the kicker, I have several upper end rods, but recently bought a new Eagle Claw Glass rod (6 wt. 6') off e-bay for like $10. I and I decided to use it for fun. The line cost more than the rod let alone the reel! What a hoot! This thing was bent to the max everytime, but I do think it helped on the hook sets and the leader.

Great report. I bought my son that same rod, and I have found my self using it a little, it is kind of a fun rod for a change.

Sounds like you had a good time at the Big D, Joni. I wish we could have made it down, but my partner was hung up, and the weather looked pretty rotten, so we didn't venture. When are you two headed up Henry's way? We'll be taking a stab at it this Saturday. Come on up if you can.
Nice photos. I've got one of those old Eagle Claw convertible glass rods as well. I haven't used it as a fly rod yet though. Where did you buy your net? I've been looking for a deal on one like that, but haven't found one. I'd sure like to hit the chronies sometime. I've never fished them, but I've got a bunch tied up, and some slip sinkers. Can you do it that way at Henry's?
Good times comin'. Lew

We missed you Lew, but "I" understand.
The net is from Tropical Lightning Creations

Tell Greg Walker I sent you and he will give you a great deal. Check out his wooden Rod Holders as well. He also has nets that have a wooden magnetic keeper built in.

This Eagle Claw is a fly rod, but I guess you could put a spinning reel on them. The guides are HUGE![laugh]

I know for sure on Henry's in September (Labor Day), but we will be hitting the "D" more. I tried to Chironomid fish with indicator one year at Henry's but with the vegetation and as shallow as it is, it was not as fast of action.
I hear these guys did great with scuds shallow. I don't know how though. If it was off a floating line or a sinking line.
Take care of business so we can meet up, k?

Flygodddess,

Start a new post on Chironomids or Danials. I love your posts and want to learn how to Chironomid fish and how to use your slip bobber. However, this post on Henrys was Hijacked.[cool]

Right On, Sorry.

The first time I went to D and saw guys fishing it I thought they were using bait because they were catching fish left and right. i was nymphing but not as deep.

I usually outfish most people but that day I was schooled. I haven't been back to D to try it.

If that guy on the right of Wild Rose Ranch pictures of opener is holding a 31" 13 lb. fish, I've been way underestimating the fish I've been catching.
I guess the smallest I caught at a lake this last weekend(that shall not be named for fear of getting chastised for hi-jacking) was in the 28" range with the largest being over 35" and into the 15 lb. range.
I gotta get me a tape measure and scale like Wild Rose has.

Let's see the pictures...

Did you actually mean 35mm?

Mojo was comparing to the pictures in the Wild Rose ad.
As far as big Henry's fish:

No arms extended here.

As for the NOT HENRY's, it was lousy weather so cameras didn't come out except the little cheapy, and I had it.

Thanks flygoddess...

Mojo I am slow today...I apologize!

No big deal.
To clear it up, If the guy in the Wild Rose picture- the Henry's opener 2008- on their webpage- is holding a 31" 13 pound trout, I want to get the same tape measures and scale as he's using. That way my fish will grow an extra 10+"
In my own sarcastic, non-believing mind, that ain't a 31", 13 pound fish.
