Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks' personnel retrieved a dead wolf from the Paradise Valley south of Livingston on May 19.
The female wolf was from the 8-mile Pack. The wolf's collar was found on mortality signal during a March monitoring flight, but winter conditions prevented retrieval until now.

Personnel brought the carcass to the State Wildlife Laboratory in Bozeman where a necropsy will be performed to determine cause of death. The animal's tail showed possible signs of mange.

The Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolf population was removed from the federal Endangered Species list in late March. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is now the lead agency for wolf conservation and management in Montana on non-tribal lands.
