My wife and I fished L.P. this morning. Probably the slowest fishing we have had there in the last two years. We fished for two hours w/o a bite. Finally, when we got near the submerged island past the narrows, we found some kokes. Landed 4 nice ones, and lost a couple. Three came off the lead core, and only one off the downriggers. Kokanee trolls w/ a wedding ring and shoepeg seemed to work best. The pole with a dodger never had so much as a bite. Likewise with a pink mini-spuid, which I have been wanting to experiment with. (My cousin did quite well last week with a hootchie (spuid). Go figure. 15 feet seemed to be the magic number. We graphed tons of schooled fish at 175 and 225. They appear to be large fish. I haven't ever seen this before. They were at the end of the narrows, and the wide area beyond. I would graph 50-100 fish in a school. I would sure like to know what they are.

Thanks, Kodiak for the report. Discouraging for sure. I'm headed up tomorrow and will report my results. I've limited the couple of times I've went but that was last week. Best fishing times tables indicate slow this week especially mid-day; then picking up June 1 through June 5. Best times next week are also mid-morning to early afternoon. Maybe this is a factor?
Wondering what those big fish are that you graphed as well. I've seen them every trip near the bottom of my finder lower depth set which is 70 feet. One of us on the forum that frequent L.P. must soon solve this question. I'm going to dedicate one trip to dragging hardward down at depth with ball flashers and a bigger chrome troll set up on my line; maybe one of us can find out?
See you up there and good luck.

Well, I sure hope you do well. The kokanee either seemed to start hitting for the first time at 1:00 (when we had to leave!) or they were congregated by the buoy marking the now submerged island....due north of the buoy. The fish and game reported today that they can be found by the dam. When we caught our last two at the buoy, two other boats near us hooked kokes almost simultaneously. By the way, have you tried the hootchies (plastic squids). They are very successful in other koke fisheries, but yesterday was the first time I have ever tried them... for kokanee. I use them exclusively for mackinaw in Payette L. and fishing for salmon in the Straits. Anyway, I look forward to your report. Mike

Those large fish may be chinook. I remember hearing that they were stocked in LP years ago.

A friend also said him and his father caught one up there trolling near the overlook. I chastised him about it and he said it had black gums, and was about 4 lbs.

Another story I heard, was that they fished for them between the bridge and spring shores in the spring.

Who knows for sure?

Hi Perry3,
The last time the F&G planted chinook was in 2000. But this doesn't mean they aren't naturally reproducing, I suppose. They also planted Lakers in 1998, and four time prior to that. They planted Splake once, in 1993. I have never heard of lake trout or splake being caught, and once I actually tried fishing for the macks, but with no success. I think I might have to drop a line down into one of these schools to hopefully answer this question. My downriggers can't reach them at the depths they have been graphed. Thanks for the input. Mike

When I went to BSU 1993-1996 I did catch both lake trout/splake below the dam so they were coming from LP.

Hey Kodiak1,

We used a 4" lead jig off Ucluelet Bay on Vancouver Island to catch salmon. Solid lead painted blue along the top and silver along the bottom. Looked like a little fish. That may be the ticket.

I'll try to find some info on those lake trout/splake. I'm sure they got to be in there, sure is deep enough.

Thanks for the info. I am heading up this Thursday, and if I find them again, I am going to drop down for them. Mike
