Decided to hit Newton again today, so a buddy and I got on the water by 6:30 this morning with the air temp at 38* and the water temp at 58.2* Never caught a fish out of Newton before but have seen some really BIG Muskie and a few really Dandy LMB. Started the day off just casting the shorline with about 6 muskie "follows" but no hook-ups. NOW, this is for the people in the previous post asking about the Muskie in Newton, saying that they are not that big, I can tell you first hand from today's "sightings" there are some MONSTERS in there. I had one follow my lure and stop when he seen the boat. I personally thought it was an aligator, no joke, AT LEAST 47"+ and that wasnt the only one. We seen at least 4 40"+ muskie today and at least 15 30-40"ers!!! Dont understand why we couldnt hook up with any with so many followers at the begining, maybe it has something to do with all the half dead crappie floating on the surface that they are "gorging" on!!! Anyone have any explanation to why all these 4-6" crappie are just floating around??? All in all a great day to be on the water other than the skiiers and wakeboarders. We only managed 3 LMB with one coming off at the boat and 1 perch. The LMB were only around 10-12", so back they went to grow, I only like to keep the BIG ones for the table[

Sounds like a decent day. I fish newton about three to four times a week it is definetly one of my fav. To bad you never got into some of them monster bass trust me they are in there check out some of my last reports. Ok not monster but good five to six pounders. Let me know when you go next we will have to hook up and I can show you some of the hot spots for the fat old hogs.

40"+??? That is what I thought before Memorial Day. The couple times I had been up there before I only seen a few around the 25" to maybe 35" class, but Memorial Day and Today, the Hogs came out of hybernation!!! That "aligator" really scared the [#ff0000]EDIT[/#ff0000] out of me, I knew what it was, just the size amazed me. Now, I am from Colorado and if anyone has fished for Tiger Muskie there and especially from Horseshoe Reservoir, I know what a 45"+ Muskie looks like and what I seen Memorial Day and today pretty much exceeds that!!!

As for the crappie situation, I had a buddy go out about a week ago and saw the same thing. I personally think the lake has turned over and the crappie are experiencing a kill. I caught a bunch of small crappie a couple weeks ago and they were only around 20ft deep and they would die and not swim back down. There is such an abundace of small crappie because of the phenominal spawn last year. This death or kill is probably a good thing to weed out the smaller ones and allow others to grow. Just my opinion if it is worth 2 cents.

did you try to change up your retrive? stop and go, reel and jerk, stop and jerk? would have been cool seeing you tangle with one of those things only to pop off at the boat. i know how you get when you lose something that big so close, aka the "hole in the net fiasco" that happened at 11-mile [:p]
