[Image: 11551.jpg][#008000]We just wanted to let you know that legislation to protect rivers in Southern California passed a major hurdle today![/#008000]
[#008000]The House has approved the California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act, introduced by Rep. Bono-Mack (R-Palm Springs). It now heads to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.[/#008000]
[#008000]The culmination of more than a decade of river and wilderness protection efforts by Friends of the River and a large coalition of other conservation organizations, the Act will protect 195,000 acres of Wilderness in Riverside County, as well as 31 miles of Wild & Scenic Rivers. [/#008000]
[#008000]The Act protects segments of the North Fork San Jacinto River, Fuller Mill Creek, Palm Canyon Creek, and Bautista Creek in the San Jacinto Mountains near Palm Springs and the mountain community of Idyllwild. Friends of the River first nominated these streams for federal protection more than 10 years ago.[/#008000]
[#008000]We expect that the legislation’s companion bill in the Senate, S. 2109 introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer, will be approved by the Senate’s key policy committee soon. Because of the bipartisan nature of its support, the outlook for passage of this protective legislation in Congress and signing by the President is hopeful before Congress adjourns for the November election.[/#008000]
