Weekend gale-force winds have forced cancellations of yet another weekend of cod fishing—déjà vu all over again for the start of May. We were able to get out four days during the week. Fishing has been slower than normal for this time of the year in the shoal-water. The baitfish still has not shown up. The deep-water is producing a mixed bag of cod, wolfish and haddock.

On Monday, both the DECISIVE and the JANET B, fished the bank with Connecticut angler groups Mike Legenos from Shelton and Kevin Griffith form Middletown. Good numbers of medium cod took the clam-bait presentations in both the shoal and deep-water. 12 haddock came over the rails from the deep-water using squid bait.

Thursday’s trip with Joe Peldunas’s group form Belleville, NJ started out slow in the morning. Moving to the north end of the bank produced limits of market cod for the group. Clams again were the best producers.

Three of B-Fast’s vessels braved the SE winds and seas on Friday. The deep-water to the east of the bank produced best with cod, haddock and wolfish making up the catch.
The split-charter of Ricky Pomales of Staten Island, NY paired up with Christopher Augier from Waltham, MA worked both the deep-water and shoal-water again using clam-baits. Mostly market cod comprised the catch with a 15-pound cod as the pool-winner. Ron Daquila and friends from Meriden, CT caught two of the biggest cod of the week, tipping the scales at 22 and 23 pounds respectively. Both were taken on clams on the shoals.
