kind of a silly question. first time i've owned an electric motor. hand control and prop are on the same side of the shaft. can i turn them a 180 degrees of each other and not mess up anything. i appreciate any info.

Im guessing it a basic minkota (sp), on mine I just removed the bolt securing the motor to the shaft and flipped it around, havent had any problems.

You flipped the motor? Mine is sealed to the shaft for water tightness. I flipped the control head on the shaft, not the motor.
If it's a Minn-kota there will be an bolt under the control head, loosen or remove, turn the head 180 degrees and re assemble.
Motor guides are a bit more with a clip and a bolt, but the same procedure applies.

on this one. Most NEW electric motors come with the prop facing one way and the control handle facing the other.
I just bought the Maximum 40. As mentioned, unbolt under head and turn, make sure wires are out of the way in the whole and put bolt back and tighten.
I prefer the head and prop facing the same direction, cause It will perform better PULLING you. I have all the forward controls to pull me, but I can go forward if I need to(in the reverse mode). I also set it in one direction and use my feet or flippers to steer.
I know allot of people mount them on the front and steer with them so they don't need to get their feet wet. I fly fish so no way do I want that motor in front of me.
Just remember, you will get more out of PULLING than PUSHING. Pontoons aren't set up like a boat.

Before I got my foot controled bow mount, I used a stern mount motor that I had switched around so it would pull from the bow of the boat, and the controls would face me.
I still have one of them.
Takes about 5 min to do after the 1st time.
Post up if you have problems doing it and between my camera and I we can walk you through it.

I prefer to be pulled because my line is then being pulled and I am watching it at all times. Backwards is the direction FF need to go. With the motor behind, there is 99% chance you won't get that $55.+ fly line caught in the prop, specially while stripping cause if you use and apron, we all know how well that holds a pile of fly line[:p].
Plus it is much easier to land a fish in front.
As far as going into shore, well that is where that reverse is nice. It will push you right up to the shore (provided you are not dragging it) or at least shallow enough, you can walk right out of the front and pull it up. Or you can backup, then walk around your boat, but I always find that drop off.[laugh]
