KAHULUI -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will close the Kula state
forest reserve and Polipoli state park for repairs to the forest access road, this week between
Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20. The reserve will reopen on Saturday June 21 at 6 a.m.
A previous announcement did not specific a reopening date or time.
The repairs are part of a two-year effort to restore damaged areas in the forest reserve. Project
contractor Goodfellow Brothers will repair and resurface portions of the asphalt.
Work was completed last week to increase the width of the cement crossing, and repair a
headwall.

Closures are necessary due to anticipated movement of heavy equipment and trucks on the
narrow one-land access road. When open, possible traffic delays of an hour or longer should be
expected. Road advisory signage will be posted along Waipoli Road and at the entrance to
Skyline Trail at the summit of Haleakala. The project cost is $249,000 and is expected to be
completed by June 30, 2008.
