Fished the Columbia River for sturgeon on June 13 & 14.

Fishing was on the slow side, but we did manage to bring two 9 footers to the boat.

Weather was great! Heading back in a week to fish for summer chinook. [Smile]

The last picture is of the shad we caught for bait, 2- 2 1/2 pounds, and we used the Whole Shad!! [Wink]

sweet, sturgeon are my favorite fish to catch. is there anywhere on the columbia you can fish without a boat? or on a boat with a 5hp? it looks like a very wide river, but i would love to fish there- i want to try sturgeon on something other than the snake river

Hey Mike,
Sounds like a great trip. Now, that's some bait!! Good luck next week with the chinook. We are going to miss you at Sekiu this September, but are hoping you will be over there next summer for the bonus pinks. Kali says "hi". Mike

Great pics and report. I went sturgeon fishing a couple of years ago on the Columbia. I only went for a day and caught tons of small ones and ended up landing a 8 1/2 footer. It is really incredible when a fish that size goes airborn.

We also used shad for bait. After we went sturgeon fishing we went shad fishing with fly rods the next day. They were pretty fun on a fly rod.

Did you have a guide or did you guide yourself/

My arms went numb just looking at those fish, oh wait, now my back hurts.

Looks like you had fun, nice going.

I'm sure there are a number of places you could fish on the Columbia with out a boat. The current at that time was pretty swift, I don't think I would want to be out there with just a 5 hp motor. I would think in the fall when the water level is lower and the current a lot slower, you would be ok with a small outboard. [Smile]

Hi Mike:

Yea, I'm planning on being in Sekiu next August, I wouldn't miss that for anything. Looks like I'll be back up on the Columbia again in October for a little salmon/sturgeon fishing.

Have you made it to Anderson yet? I should be over there sometime in July for a trip or two. [Smile]

There is nothing like seeing a 9 foot sturgeon clear the water by 4 feet, right after a hard hookset coming up out of 70 feet of water. [shocked]

We did have a guide while we were there. He turned out to be a super guy and a real pleasure to fish with. I am planning a few more trips back this year to fish with him. If your interested PM and I'll get you his info. [Wink]

Hey EZ, sounds like you been there done that. [laugh]

Both of those fish came to the boat in 45 minutes, but it was a LONG 45 minutes. The guide running the boat did a great job in getting the fish out of the current and into an eddy where we could fight em better. [Smile]

And YES it was a lot of fun, I'll be back for sure, for that 12 footer. I guess I just like feelin the pain. [cool]
