What do you want to catch? (don't say fish).
Macks? Splake? Rainbows? Browns? The splake and rainbows are everywhere, and also very easy to catch. The big splake and macs will be the hardest to catch you have to target them very specifically to get into them. They could be deep by now, i've never found that fishlake macks stay to a certain depth, you can catch one at 80 feet dragging your lure through the mud then 2 minutes later catch one that just took a fly off the surface. They never stop moving so trolling is the best way to get to them. Don't ask me about the browns i've only caught one there and it was through the ice.

There's also tons of perch in Fish Lake. Anything small with a little piece of night crawler works. Just off the bottom.

Whats the best way to catch the rainbows here? I am not from this area but will be checking out the lake soon!!

pop gear and a worm works the best for rainbows (i've heard) but i think any kind of trolling technique with spinners or minnows would do it.

Any suggestions for macks? Thanks
Olmoose,

The good ol' boys down there used to use copper line to fish very deep on the east side with flatfish. I fished with one once and it is quite an art form. Flatfish colors he used were frog, frog and frog colored baits. He really liked the slow wobble they produced. We pulled popgear and a worm or another lure behind on leaded line and caught a couple of them that same day. They were pups up to 10lbs and had to be released in his boat. It was the biggest fish I had ever caught other than carp. Maybe someone on here has the copperline technique down and will share.

Good luck and enjoy that beautiful area.

That's funny you mention the frog flatfish thing, i've heard that from alot of the locals both the copperliners and the non. They say if you can find one of the old school flatfish with the tiny scales painted on you're in business. Copperline guys seem like they do pretty well up there, i watched an elderly gentleman catch a 24 pounder with one of those paddles not too long ago. But if you're not into the copper use downriggers with pop gear and BIG minnows or the flatfish. I'll be up there tommorrow night for 2 nights so any of y'all that wants to chat come say hello!

I guess that I am one of the good ol boys that still use a paddle and copper line. I will often pull a minnow behind either pop gear or a dodger. It is a bit of an art form. It has no give so you can feel every time you touch the bottom with the pop gear blade or if a fish bumps the minnow at all. My family is from that area and have fished that way for years. If you target rainbows about 3-4 colors of lead core and popgear and a worm or a flat fish in about an f-7. I used to fish for rainbows early or just before dark right on the surface with a spinning rod and mono with a flatfish with a split shot for weight to keep it just below the surface. That is a grat plae to spend a few days I hope you a good trip. gshorthair.

Gshorthair,

I know a guy who has used them and watched them used before by he grandfather and father. The time that is spent trying to learn any lake like Fish Lake to be able to know when to reel up a few turns or not is amazing. I always have wanted to see it done. I grew up in Aurora only an hour from Fish Lake. Great place to ice fish.

I am sorry it took so long to get back to you I don't have any internet at home so my access is at the school where I teach. I come in about once a week to take care of my snake and check the fishing reports. My dad grew up in Monroe and worked up at fish lake for 6 summers. At that time there were no down riggers and copper line was the only way to get down deep enough. It is impressive to watch him work the bottom. He learned the lake when there were no gps and you used landmarks to find the different runs on the lake. It is something that is fading fast with all the new technology. I still like being old fashioned.gshorthair
