I am in the process of building a bamboo rod so the old man was looking for a classic reel for me on e-bay. Look what we scored.







SOUTH BEND

Now two problems....one, I already bought GREEN SILK for the wraps on my bamboo and two, it is right hand retrieve.

But look at it here:

Too bad it's right hand wind. You can't open it up, and reverse a pawl inside?

Looks like a one spool wonder. too bad. I have a old Sage reel that has only one spool, and use something like a Reo Versitip combo on it. Works out pretty well.

Any details on your new bamboo rod?

I asked some pros about switching the drag, no can do.
It is okay that it is one spool, cause on a bamboo, it will be a dry line.
All I can tell you on the rod is that the blank is being built by one of the best glass rod builders around. I have chosen an 8' 5 wt. Payne 201.
I know what hardware I want and the reel seat. The cork is going to be rattaned.

Nice! Now you just need to be a switch caster if you aren't already. I do find myself casting left handed when I'm working up a stream on the right side next to brush in difficult to wade water. I'll switch the rod in my left hand to avoid the brush protruding into the stream. I'll see a good looking hole or spot a nice fish while I'm trying to get through that mess and just cast with my left.

Thanks Riverdog, I have been know to switch for the occasion also.
I just realized today while on the Middle Provo (by the way, COMBAT fishing at it's finest, but the Green Drakes in a #12 are the ticket), that I strip the line instead of reeling and the Bamboo will be a River Rod, so I should be fine. Just got to order more silk in a Burgundy or a blood red.
