For years I have been hearing about sturgeon fishing. I have to admit, I have been a bit skeptical, but after yesterday, I am now a believer.
We got to the lake early yesterday morning. I was lucky to be with someone who knew what they were doing. He has been fishing religiously for sturgeon for the last 6 years and has definitely figured them out.
After getting the poles all ready and in the water, we started to wait. Three different times we had bites in the first 45 minutes but they would not stick around long enough to get a hookset. Then, it happened, there was a tap tap on the pole and off it went.
After a few seconds, it seemed like the fish wasn't that big. We actually thought it might have been a big catfish. Then out of nowhere, this 7 foot sturgeon was airborne 10 feet from the boat doing a tail dance on the water. I just about had a heart attack. I'd never seen a sturgeon in the wild let alone doing those kind of acrobats right in front of me. After he went airborne, the fight was on.
We fished from 9am till 6pm. We hooked 6 and landed 6. The smallest was 6 foot and the largest was just over 9 foot. We estimated that over 2 hours of our fishing time was spent fighting fish.
I have a huge respect for these fish and their ability to fight. The 9 ftr was pulling the boat upstream while I was trying to hold on for my life. What a great experience!
