There seems to be some problems lately, our new layout is supposed to re-size pics that are inline but it seems to me that it downloads the full size pic and then re-sizes it to one that fits in the screen.
This is a problem for some but not others. I would really like to know what part of the population this is affecting. I have high speed internet so I haven't noticed a problem. By now, dial-up is a thing of of the past but I may be wrong. There have been lots of warnings going out about the size of the inline pics. I see two solutions #1. Let the pc download the pic and re-size with no hassle #2 Continue trying to educate the pic posters untill they no longer post pics because they don't want to take the time to re-size. Please let me know as this will help all of us, thanks.
P.S. Moderators, I know you are just doing your job (and well paid), this post has no reflection on the great job you are doing. Please let the persons on the General Discussion board reply to this and do not delete or move this post. This has to be resolved.

I use Comcast on all 3 computers but my connection sucks. My laptop does pretty good but my other 2 are dinosaurs and when i am on them it takes forever to download a pic that's too big. I have seen first hand how bad it sucks to open pics with slow connections.[

i would have to vote twice. when im in germany i use high speed ISP's. here in oraq its dial up and that would be on a good day (we dont actually use dial up, but bandwidth is consumed by more oimportant things then looking at BFT).

I have DSL... well, my dad has it LOL
I have a friend in a chat room I go to, that has dial-up... I teased him the other day with "Dial-up? *scoff* That is sooo last century!" [laugh]

[cool][#0000ff]For the record, us mods have high speed connections too, and have no problems. As a photographer, I appreciate having larger file pics. Better detail and resolution. So, you get no argument from me on using big pictures.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, it is unfair to burden the large number of BFT members who still use dialup. Not all people are rich enough to afford good computers and pay for high speed internet. Those on dial up get frustrated when they want to see our pics and have to wait for minutes...and then their computer "times out" on them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The inline function is a close to auto sizing as we are going to get...but many of our members are not computer savvy enough to figure out the inline thing...even with detailed instructions. It does require a few extra steps. And, the automatic downsizing occurs as the post is displayed...but the pictures still appear full size while you are loading them. That can be a problem with adding text as you go. You have to write the text first, and then place the cursor where you want the picture when you click the inline.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We can't add the auto size function to the attachment pics without eliminating the potential for adding videos or large PDF files. You can't have it all.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am sure that Kent will chime in here. He was out of town over the weekend and tried to get in on the board using his relatives dialup service. He experienced the difficulty in uploading even a "legal" picture.[/#0000ff]

I have dial-up. The pictures load very slow. But I do enjoy seeing the larger size pictures.

High speed is nice, but I can see where others on dial-up are coming from. It would be nice if you could just slap up your pics, or perhaps even have a box to check that will auto-resize if you are so inclined, but a few extra steps so that all can enjoy is OK. I feel bad that the mods have to spend a lot of time resizing pics though.

I used a dial-up connection on Friday through Sunday while visiting relatives in Idaho. I couldn't even see the pictures that were posted Inline, and to even open the smallest attached pictures was a major pain. As a moderator, I spend more time resizing posted pictures than I spend doing all other duties as a moderator combined, so believe me when I say I wish there was some way that the software could automatically take care of this. What keeps me going is receiving that large paycheck every couple weeks from BFT

What is dial up?[

]
I've never seen a speed problem with pics. so I'm good with bigger files. What about having different file sizes to choose from? One for speed impaired computer systems and another for the rest of us. I have seen fishing videos online where they ask for your speed then send the appropriate file.

While we are at it, lets get rid of this archaic 800 pixel width website... I say get with the times or quit bitching about it. So the pics take a while to load, big deal, suck it up and go fishing or grad a cup of coffee while they load. Maybe I am one of those there young whipper snappers; but upgrade already.
-Just voted... Looks like so far a whole 2 out of 41 people are on dial-up. Talk about the squeaky wheel getting the grease...

you know i have done that a time or two here.. i have loaded the small pic's and in a sepret post put the big pic's and put a warning that they are big pic's for high speed. and the mod's seem to be ok with that..
all i'm saying is my camrea is what 3 years old now and still taking bigger pic's at lowest res. than the site can handle? i'm suer there has to be some kind of program that could be put in place to resize pictures on a site like this.. maybe a little to pricey? i'm sure it would take a big load off the mod's hands if there was...

[#000000]I have cheap dial-up Internet for $10/month. I don't even bother clicking on over-sized images on BFT. I am very happy with the size rule. Unless high-speed/broadband/fiber-optic or whatnot gets to $10/ month, I am not wasting any money on another internet speed. With this dial-up I can check e-mail, BFT, and everything else, I am perfectly satisfied. This saves a lot of gas and fishing money for fishing trips, I tell you what.[/#000000]

I have dial up, And if I could " upgrade already" I would. but I cant afford it!. But at the same time, I'm not bitchin about not being able to see the pictures before my computer times out either, I just dont bother to look at the larger pics.

While in Idaho, I have dial-up. But thats a weekend or week a month. The rest of the time its high speed. I always like the big pics. Nothing says I have to open them.

I hear ya about gas prices. I have Quest for DSL internet service. I had to start a petition in my neighborhood to get their internet service here but I only pay $27/month and it's well worth it.

I have been on High-Speed for ~ 10 years now .. I cannot and will not use dial-up. Plus, as a bonus for me.. my work requires me to have High speed and re-imburse me for it... Anywho... wanna test your connection speed? Here is my favorite site to do that at..
speedtest.net
At home I usually get 6000 down and 2000 up.. At work... 25000 down and 3500 up

Good point 3M
Although I have High speed internet I rarely look at, or post, photos. I vote with the dial-up'ers to keep the photos at a reasonable size so all that care to look at photos can do without their PC timing out.
And anyone that dont like MHO can kiss my,,,,, bobber! [:p]
