I convinced a couple of close friends to try a hike into some lake in the Uintahs this last Thursday night and all day Friday. Left Ogden around 6:30pm and arrived at our cabin destination with about 30 minutes of fishing light left. Fish were rising and we couldn't wait to start the trip. We caught many small brook trout out of a small unnamed pond next to the cabin. One inhaled my spinner and I kept it for dinner with the spuds, onions, shrooms and t-bones. What a fantastic dinner.
Up Friday morning at light and off to the Ruth lake trailhead for the hike. Fished Ruth L. on the way in and nothing though a few fish were rising.
We decided to try Hayden lake which held no fish due to being very shallow. Fished for about 30 minutes with different flies and spinners. I had a spinning rod and my friends had their fly rods.
Hiked into Jewel L. and fish were feeding on the surface and in the shallows. Tried all I could think of including many of my favorite lures to no avail. Ended up with another big zero for fish there.
We started our way to Teal Lake which was our goal. We stopped and fished small streams and pools with fish feeding on the surface and we did very well on both flies and spinners. I used a 0 Panther Martin with a gold blade and greenish body. I lost count on the number of fish caught on it. Flies being used were parachute adams, humpies and black gnats. The brookies were very aggressive and that is what we wanted.
Finally arrived at Teal L. and I started to cast and cast. Nothing. This was not the way it was supposed to be. I switched to a Jakes in silver and first cast was immediately taken by a nice little brookie. He was big enough for lunch. I passed the rod to my friend and he tried for one. Nothing. He tried multiple spinners and rapalas. He didn't get a hit. I got my rod back and put on a gold Jakes and caught an honest 14" brookie. He was big enough to share. So we had lunch provided and at fish on the shore. It was great. I was a little disappointed to not catch more there but there were still other places to try.
We headed to Cutthroat L. and found another little puddle with cutts that were hungry. We had a blast. They were beautiful little fish. We made it to Cutthroat L. and fished for quite some time before a fish was caught. Only one there. I missed a few on my buddies fly rod on some emerger patterns.
The decision was made to climb the mountain and hit Lofty Lake for our final lake of the day. It is just about 10,800 feet. We sat a chatted about the day and soaked in the sun. It was great and caught one nice cutt. After fishing the entire lake we decided to head back to Ruth for the evening rise.
I was a little displeased to see only a few fish rising but Sam still managed a good brookie on his fly rod. All in all it was a great trip. The little streams and ponds on the way to the lakes saved the day and provided some great fun.
