[font "Comic Sans MS"][size 3][#002850]I was looking through the profile of one of our prominent Utah members and seen this:

[#800000]"A big ol' dude who has been float tube fishing for over 50 years. "
[/#800000]

Being one who enjoys antiques, I couldn't help but wonder, after 50 years of fishing, what item(s) he wish he wouldn't have sold, given away, or trashed ... things that he wished he still had ... mainly for antique purposes.

Question for you all: What fishing item(s) do you wish you still had that you no longer do ... how did you end up with out it, and why do you wish you still had it?[/#002850][/size][/font]

[Wink] nice post there Old Coot !!!! For I'm not as prominent as many 50 plus year fisherman... But bein 30 I have few lost articles that I'd like to have back.. 1st off would be a fishing buddy of mine that has lost his inner hardcore fisherself due to loss of interest any many hard hours worked.. 2nd would be a automatic fly reel that i was given by my grandpa that i dropped along with a old old browning fly rod while fishin for cutts at Pyramid Lake in NV... at last but not least would be time thats been lost since i learned the desire to be a fisherman..fish on.. FISHAMANIAC..[Wink]

how did i come to not have it in my box? well i do have to say it went out in style.. i was fishing the stick up at yuba in the 80's had a big pike expolad on it got a good hook in it.. then it put a good hook in one of the tree's on the bottom..

never have found one to replace it that i want to pay as much as they want for the old wood ones. but i do miss that bad boy..

In my opinion, the time during fishing isn't lost, but well spent... especially if you're with family and/or friends. Maybe if you're all alone and get skunked, then that's lost! LOL

Since I only started this spring, I don't think I lost anything yet....
I did lose a really nifty lookin' lure at Holmes Creek (those rocks eat all my stuff!), but I just went to Wal-Mart and bought another one...so that doesn't count as truly lost, I guess.

How about the old Mitchell 300. First "real" fishing reel I ever owned. I got it when I was about 14. I used to take it completely apart and put it back together just to lube it. Disappeared long ago and I'm not sure what happened to it.

As far as fishing,,, Well I suppose I meet the criteria of one who has been fishing for 50+ years. The # one thing I wish I still had is the feller that introduced this old boy to fishing, my dad. Second choice is my first cast-able fishing pole I receive as a gift for my 7th or 8th birthday from the same ol' feller. It wasnt anything special, just a Zebo combo, but to it have that back now would mean a lot to me. Up till that point I was taught to handle a cane pole.

The first thing that comes to my mind is a knife my grandpa made out of a pitch fork prong. He heated the prong up and hammered it down to a razor sharp blade. I lost it at willard bay in the boulders on the west side 15+ years ago. It was very special to me.[frown]

I have a really nice (pricey but amazing action) spinning rod that I got on a screaming deal. I bought it's twin and gave it to my brother for his birthday and it just collects dust. I wish I still had that twin in my arsenal. I wonder if he'd notice it missing?[Wink]

Two things: A really old fishing tip book given to me by a relative. It had some really good tips and some really weird tips. The only one I remember is that if the fish are not biting in your favorite stretch of stream, it said to thrash up an down the stream to wake up the fish and then come back and fish an hour later.

The other thing I wish I still had was a lure from my late grandfather. It was like a Rapala with a lip, only the body of the lure was an actual fish, a shad maybe, dipped in clear plastic. He even had the packaging.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#000000]Some years ago I lost an Old timer knife that my dad gave me, took it every place, and cut up alot of thing I should have not [:/], the Old timer knife is over 50 years old (my dad had it when he was a boy), and I think it even had a good $ to it if sold in a shop. [font "Comic Sans MS"][#000000]About 2-3 months ago I found it in a box of Wyoming Wind river camping things I have keep over the years, it was like Christmas as a kid again [cool] you can not replace memorys [Wink], and Coot you may remember it when we were young and in wind rivers, back in the 70s.[laugh][/#000000][/font]

All of the gear, tackle and stuff is all material. I wish i could have just one more day with each of my two grandfathers to go out to our favorite fishing hole for the day.

That would be the best memory i could ever ask for. WOW! I could think of so much to talk about and reminis. That would be priceless.

Great post Ralph

Definitely my wife's camera that I dropped in the water while wrestling with a 15" cutt who wouldn't settle down for a picture up diamond fork. Not a happy confession to make, considering that she was reluctant to let me take it saying I would surely drop it in the water. Not a good discussion.

Other than that, I regret not starting to fish till age 23. I guess I lost at least 10 years of good fishing.

LOL, Ron your right. As worthless as it looked, it sure drill a hole fast, and whats more, it was a ta lighter to pack around than my 10" Lazer, LOL! Who says a feller get wiser has he gets older? It aint so, we just get perttier.
On the flip side, that spoon auger wouldnt do us much good at FG, BL or FL while hunting a certain somethings.. [laugh]

[#0000ff][cool]Hey...I resemble that remark.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]First thing I wish I still had was the strength and stamina I had those many years ago. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On a tackle basis, I wish I still had a 9' sage fly rod I lovingly built (5 weight) many years ago. Loved that rod. A new son-in-law talked me out of it and a couple of boxes of trout flies, since I lived in Arizona then and did not fling flies for troutskis much at that time. Long story short...the son-in-law is history and so is my rod and flies. Good riddance to the SIL...still miss the rod.[/#0000ff]

I didn't start until I was 30. But I'm making up for it now! [Wink]

I wish I had my gradpa's fishn pole back. I've never fished with him, but I know he used that pole a lot when he was younger.

Anyway, the pole is at the bottom of Mud Creek. Let a friend use it one time. He was in his home made canoe. And him being 6' 6" 200lbs, clumsy as hell, there was no chance of him keeping that thing upright.

I wish my kid was still interested in fishing with me.............maybe one day his interests will turn back.
