Hi Parker,
Hey, you and I think alike! I, too, have wondered if those fish on the bottom could be macs. In fact, I spent one whole day fishing for them. I have fished for mackinaw most of my life, primarily in Payette Lake, and was hoping I could find them in L.P. However, no such luck. So, in answer to your question, here is a good way to fish for them. Either use a large flatfish, either all silver, or silver with a little blue or green on it, or use a size 0 dodger, silver or with a little red or green on it, and a hootchie behind it. Put either a little sucker meat on it (very little) or a full night crawler. In either case, keep it about 2-3 feet off the bottom. Remember, if you are using the flatfish, it will dive down a bit, so compensate with raising the ball a bit higher than compared with the hootchie/dodger combo. Two other things. Fishing on the bottom with a downrigger can be dangerous if you tighten up the drag on the 'rigger too tight. Just barely tighten it, and you won't get sunk! Also, macs like a slow troll. I troll .8 mph. Good luck, and let me know how you do. Mike

Alright!!! Hope someone sheds some light on those returns near the bottom. It just might start a new fishery at L.P.! I keep saying I'm going to target them but just can't get past the sweet taste of smoked Kokanee...
The way I see it is they have to be big rainbows, maybe lakers or the remote possibility of Chinook planted way back when. I read somewhere that Chinook in a lake will lay right down on the bottom...
Hopefully they are not 10 + pound pikeminnows????[
