Why get up early I say!!! If you really want the heat of the day don't get out there until 1100 my friends tell me. After all, aren't these warmwater fish???
Wife and I have been trying to get away his last week and get out to Willard for Wipers. When we got there it was white caps and everyone was coming in but a few hearty souls. That's OK because I like rock-n-roll.
We went right across to the light pole and fast trolled along the West bank, North half. Mixed it up on colors but blue and silver/chrome were the consistant hitters. Real close in consistantly in about 7' of water, We boated a total of five wipers all about 15" except for the one pictered that my wife caught. (She always catches the biggest fish). The other four I could swear we were catching the same one over and over again. Had more hits and a couple really big ones but couldn't keep em on.
Only problem with that shallow and close is that we lost two lures and a tip of one of the poles to snag-ups.
When the wind started to die down we zoomed over to the feedlot and trolled up into East Bay to catfish for a litle while. Lots of fish marking on the sonar but no takers.
Shirmp and wormed it near the bottom under a casting float for about an hour and although we never got one to the boat we had a couple of take-downs and one monster take it all hit (maybe a golden cafish???). Once the wind died down it was miserably hot and sticky so we packed it in for the day.
We are going to hit the catfish area one evening during the week when it is a little cooler.
