We had a family reunion this weekend and some cousins wanted to try crawfish diving. So on our way to the reunion about six of us stopped by my favorite crawfish hole and we had a blast. We didn't count how many we caught but I estimate it was close to 500. It took us a couple of hours to cook and eat them all and we were all stuffed to the max, and had some leftover for the freezer. You might think that we made a big dent out of the population, but we caught all of these in only about 150 yards of shoreline and more got away than what we caught.

That sounds awesome! I've only been able to get out and do that once, but it was a blast. I'm going again this weekend.
If it's not too secret of a spot, I'd like to try new areas, (you can pm me if you want, if not that's cool too)

What's with the gloves [:p]?!

Its no secret just anywhere at Ririe resevoir where there are alot of rocks. We wear gloves just in case a big one gets a hold of you. Also some times turning over rocks can be a good way of getting at them and some of those rocks are pretty sharp. Let me know how yah do, and if you need any tips on how to clean them and cook them I can help.

[quote maghunter We didn't count how many we caught but I estimate it was close to 500. It took us a couple of hours to cook and eat them all and we were all stuffed to the max. The Idaho Fish and Game manual clearly states a limit of 6 crawfish ("Lobster") per day[mad]......oh just kidding...500....that's crazy.. do they actually taste like lobster?? If so I might have to give it a try...Ririe is one of my fishing spots.

Fair enough, that's where I'm going too. Thanks for the info, and I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, I finally made it out yesterday for a while and had a lot of fun. I got quite a few, with a couple of big ones (see pics).
I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the biology of crawdads. In one of my pictures, one is very blue, and one is very red colored on their undersides and claws. Are these different species? Is one a male and one a female? Or do they just come in different colors?
Just wondering

cool pics. I've wondered the same thing about the different colors. Some of them turn black when you cook them. I've noticed that the blue ones seem to be down deeper below the thermal zone and the smaller brown ones are in warmer water. So maybe there are more than one species up there.

Those are some awsome crawdads. Maybe I will have to try later in the week.

I was going to guess Ririe. I was up there over the 24th. I love Lobster and have had Crawfish from Flaming Gorge, I fly fish and I wanted to do some, my nephew however took me crawfishing at MID-NIGHT. He proceeded with the traps and even spinning outfit. I know we were there for maybe an hour and had probably 200 of them.
Good eating, just not what I want to do when I am by water[laugh]
