I will be taking the family for a two week trip to California to stay with my wife's parents. Two weeks will be an eternity for me so I need some time away. I am hoping someone here will have some ideas on fishing in California. If anyone has advice on charter services, types of fishing, types of fish, etc. I am open for all information. I have never fished California before so I don't even know what to look for.
Thanks in advance.

[cool][#0000ff]California is a big place, with many different kinds of fishing available.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Where will you be staying?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]What kind of fishing do you prefer?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]What kind of tackle are you taking?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have lived and fished all over California, freshwater and saltwater. We have a lot of other BFTers who have a lot of Cal experience also. Should be able to give you some good ideas.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You are on your own with the inlaws. Just remember what you have learned about the inadvisablity of homicide. Even with your "connections" it would be tough to get a ruling of "justifiable" in California.[/#0000ff]

We will be staying in the Orange County area and I won't be taking any fishing equipment unless I can learn enough now to make it worth taking. I don't have a preference on what kind of fishing I do. I just want to get out and experience something different than what's here in Utah. I don't care if it's in a river, or deep sea, or big fish or little fish. When it's two weeks with the inlaws, even though they are not so bad, I need time to myself to get away. Hopefully I can figure something out.

[cool][#0000ff]If you don't have your own tackle, you will be limited. But, on the other hand, most of the salt water landings have rental gear that will suffice, even though it is not the best quality and it gets beat up a lot.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are a couple of landings out of Newport Beach. Here are some links with all the info you need:[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you have the time and the inclination, head further south to Dana Point, Oceanside or San Diego. Several great landings in the San Diego area and fishing is always good.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I recall, you can also rent small boats in Newport, and fish inside the bay for a variety of species. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you want fresh water fishing in Orange County, there are several "pay to fish" lakes along the Santa Ana River" that stock BIG trout, catfish, etc. There is also Irvine Lake, where you can rent boats and probably tackle too. Not sure about that.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you get lonely for some pine trees and water, you can drive up to Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear to cool off and see some mountains. There can be some good fishing in both, but fall and spring are usually best.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Good luck and have fun. Hopefully others will chime in with some suggestions.[/#0000ff]

Fishluvr if your looking for some saltwater fun now the time to go out, dont know when your coming to california. But a fish called the sand bass if starting to show up right in orange county. Its a seasonal migration, as of right know its just stupid fishing. Every cast is a fish for hours if the captain can find the spots, you can throw anything at them. Bring a heavy largemouth bass rig, would do the trick with 15 pound test. You will be fishing in 40 to 70 feet, just stick with live bait. The rig to use is called a dropper loop, or catfish rig They fight a lot harder then your largemouth bass but same techniques will work. Have fun, i am going out there for school soon.

Thanks Deek and Dude for the replies. I will be going out in November so I don't know what's good then. I will have to do some research. I would love to hit some kind of charter boat for something big but I don't even know if that option is available around close.
