Yes, the State Fair's almost here. Here's a primer on some DNR highlights you don't want to miss.

Snakes Alive! Returns
Hoosiers get another chance to catch this old favorite, which showcases the snakes of Indiana. Interpretive naturalists from state properties all over Indiana will bring snakes to the DNR amphitheater every day at 10 a.m., excluding Aug. 15.
Third Year Running for the Kids Fishin' Pond, Butterfly Garden
Children between ages 5 and 16 get the opportunity to learn to fish for free at this popular state fair destination. The Fishin' Pond runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and 4 to 7 p.m. most days. Advance registration is required.
The Butterfly Garden returns, featuring beautiful live butterflies for visitors to enjoy. Some select species featured include giant swallowtails, red admirals, Gulf fritillaries and monarchs. The garden is adjacent to the Natural Resources Building.
Speaking of bugs, Hoosiers have dealt with some not-so-nice specimens in the last few years, which is where the Invasive Species Booth comes in. Hosted by the divisions of Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, and Entomology and Plant Pathology, the event features DNR staff talking with visitors about non-native insects and other creatures, including the emerald ash borer, gypsy moth and Asian carp, among others. Stop by the booth located in the Natural Resources Building to see what the agency is doing to manage this problem.
Taste of the Wild Cookout
Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to dine on fare taken and prepared by Hoosier hunters and anglers. Come to the Taste of the Wild Cookout, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m., for a free taste of Indiana's wild. Sponsored by Indiana State Park Inns, the cookout features dishes such as barbecued beaver, turtle soup, creek bank potatoes and venison sloppy joes. The esteemed chefs come from such groups as the Indiana Sportsmen's Roundtable, Angel Mounds State Historic Site and Indianapolis Fly Casters.
Law Enforcement Booth
Thanks in large part to the supervision and expertise of the Indiana Conservation Officers who will be on hand, kids can learn how to shoot a bow and arrow or an air rifle at this booth in the Natural Resources Building. While your child safely learns this skill, you can help the hungry by purchasing a Sportsman's Benevolence Fund pin. Funds gained from the sale of these $5 pins pay for the processing of deer that are donated to Indiana food banks. Also in the spirit of helping, Turn-in-a-Poacher or Polluter (TIP) hats and pins will be available. Do your part to help fund the fight against illegal poaching.
Architectural Trolley Tour of Historical Fairgrounds Buildings
On select evenings, fair-goers can go on a free trolley tour of several fairgrounds buildings. Expert guides lead the tour and give visitors an opportunity to learn about the architecture and fascinating history of each building. Tours leave the Natural Resources Building at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 16 and 17.
