I am going up this weekend to fish for kokes. We like to use dodgers and UV squids from Rocky Mountain Tackle. I have always hooked half a worm between the two hooks. This makes it look like a worm is following the squid. It looks pretty cool. With trout, it seems to work well. However, I question its presentation when fishing for kokane. It would be interesting to hear form all you kokanee experts what you think about my set up.

I'm by far no kokanee expert but I can tell you that they don't eat worms. That doesn't mean they won't hit a lure with a worm on it but kokes are plankton eaters, plan and simple. Adding scent is your best bet when it comes to catching kokes on a bare hook. You said you were going fishing for the kokes but you did not say where you were going? The reason I ask is because in some states it is legal to use corn on your hook and I have heard that can increase your catch rate. Good luck and let us know how you do. WH2

I would recomend that you don't use a worm on your squids when chasing kokes, the best thing I've used to scent them with is pro cure "carp spit" or "kokanee special" these two scents are 90% of what I use for kokanee fishing. Running a straight worm you will catch trout before you will catch kokanee.

That's the answer I've been looking for. They just don't care to eat worms do they. Thats probably one of the reasons why you don't catch them off the shore using bait. I can testify to many trips catching trout with this set-up but as far as targeting Kokes, the success has been far and few in between. Thanks guys.

How about colors to use? RMT has put a nice arrangement of UV colors to choose from. What colors do best at certain depths?

I have never fished for kokanee, yet, but I don't think they eat squids either![:p] I've always wondered about that, what is the attraction? Is it a predatory response that they after flashy metal and squids?

You are right, they don't eat lures, they hit them because they are irritated by them, that is why bright colors work so well. Chartreuse, orange and pink are all go to colors, as is the flash of a spinner blade or lure at times. If worms or corn seem to entice the kokes at times it is because of the scent, not because they want to eat them. WH2
