and an adventur it was! [sly]

started out friday mornning left the house about 10:00 had to run to provo sportsmen's and get some stuff.. then it was on to the lake..

the plan was to meet mactuna at the ramp around 6:30'ish. (but i did not get the PM he must have sent after i left) and being me i did not leve him my cell # before i left.. so we got to the lake to find out they want 16.00 per night for the state park.. i said shine that!!! we paid 10.00 for indian creek insted... used old highway 40 to put the boat in.. got camp set up and found out i did not pack the OFF so after donatinig a pint or so by the time we had camp set up.. i checked the time we still had 2 hours befor we were to meet mactuna at the ramp.. so a quick trip to town and get some bug spray and back.. got in the boat and headed to the ramp.. well we fished around the ramp for a while tell about 6:00.. just cought 3 or 4 perch.. well we tied up to the dock and waited.. about 6:30 the only way i can describe it was a micro hurricane hit the area! lightning, hail, 80 to 90 mph winds and swuring from every direction.. kind-a cool if your not out in it!! we took shelter in the out house up on the hill.. did see some poor bugger on his way to the docks right befor it hit but could not see them when it was hitting.. could not see much more then 4 or 5 feet as the storm raged.. well just as fast as it hit it was on it's way and cleared up some.. so we waited tell about 7:30.. well did not see mactuna and the wether was looking ugly so we just headed back to camp.. spent that night lisning to the thunder, rain beat down on the tent.. got up the next mornning to mostley clam lake.. cool we headed over to rabbit gulch to try for some eye's and perch.. we did not get any eye's but did find lot's and lot's of perch! and some nice fat one's to.. tommy put on a yumm crawdad and was not tipping it with anything.. droped it down and wham had one right off the bat.. i played around with some jig's. and found like most perch lakes it realy don't make much of a diffrence what ya put in frount of them. as long as it has a chunck of perch on it they will try and eat it! lol tho tommy was still getting more bit's than me i was hook more then he was.. did hook into a nice around 14" about 1 1/2 lb perch.. about 10:30 we headed in for some grub and a swim..
headed back out and cought even more perch tell about 4:30 or so before the lightning started get close we headed back to camp to see if it was going to die down some.. nope stay stedy wind and rain off and on tell night.. no night fishing that night ether.. darn!..
well got up sunday (my B-day BTW) [sly]. and told tommy we are going to catch a eye today! lol we started out a rabbit gulch trying bottom bouncers after going through 2 doz. worms and catching 3 doz. perch and cleaning 1/2 a ton salad off our lines tommy asked if we could try the cranks! i said why not.. we troll around the islands once or twice.. then to meny boat moved in so we headed to the back part of the bay.. turen out to be a good move. tommy hit his first eye out in about 20 feet of water.. then we turen around came back through and i cought a bit bigger eye. next time out i lost my crank and tommy hit 1 more eye.. we keep going through the area and hitting perch and missed 3 more eye's one almost at the net.. then they turned off.. just perch affter that.. so i thought maybe i could get tommy a smally trolling.. so we trolled back down the west side where i hit 3 smalley's tommy none.. darn.. well it's about 2:00 and hunger had set in so in we whent in for lunch.. affter lunch the wind had picked up and the cell's where moveing in we said shine that.. loaded up all the stuff and headed home! got home and cooked 2 perch and 3 eye's up for B-day dinner.. yummy!! [sly]
was an adventur to rember!!

Nice report Fuzzy, looks like you found the fish too. PM ed you you must have left before it was sent.
[signature]
yes ya did.. and i figured something like that happened.. or ya got a better wether report than i did! [:p].. i had no idea that the state parks have messed up that lake so bad!! it's worse then yuba is! oh well next time i'll camp on my sisters land about 4 miles from the lake but better than paying to just park the truck.. [unimpressed]

[cool][#0000ff]Sorry that Mama Nature pitched a hissy fit on ya, but glad you got in some fishing and caught some fishies. That one perch was a toad. There are lots of 14" plus perch in there but it is hard to get through the small ones to get the bigger ones when you find them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The perch in Starvation are a lot healthier than the Yuba clan...and you don't have to fight off the carpinskis to get them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Looks like we are headed back over tomorrow so I hope you left a few for us. I have an annual permit so I don't sweat the outrageous one day fees. Like most things in life these days...pay more get less.[/#0000ff]

lol well i'm no stranger to what Starvation can dish out.. been there done that! it has been about 15 years that i put a boat in tho or camped there. so was a bit shocked to see the state parks have runed yet another great lake for they'er profit!![mad]..

and as you say the perch in there are doing great! the first one tommy cought we cut up for bait. i could tell it had alot of meat on it! and on the micro light poles we were useing they put up a great fight! the walleye's are a bit on the small side but still a lot of meat on them as well.. once i got us out of the salad and on the edges of it we did get into better perch.. and putting a heaver jig on helped to bomb it down past the smaller perch.. it was a good trip and i'm glad we got up there! hope to do it more soon.. but like i said my sister has land in the area so i'll just stay there and not put any more than i have to in the state parks pockit's..lol

On Sunday morning I'm pretty sure I saw you in Rabbit Gulch - the wife & I were in the small 12 foot aluminum gray/green boat trolling toward the back of the bay. We started about 10 am till noon and were using the electric motor and worm harnesses.

I never had a depth finder for my little boat but had found an old suction cup bracket and I was able to convert my ice fishing fish finder to work great in my little Starcraft.

The depth finder turned out to be the key to finding an under water hump that was 12' deep with 30' all around it. We would start trolling on top and about at 20 feet deep we would send down the 3 oz. worm harness weights and it was like a feeding freezy.

We only had two dozen night crawlers and once we got into the fish it was non-stop action. By the end of the worms we had boated at least 30 perch and kepted 10 and had at least 10 walleye and kept 4 with the biggest just over 20 inches. The wife did have big eye of the day do the self release out of the net that was probably close to 25".

I want to thank Tudedude for his great recon - I have fished Starvation many times before but mostly at the North or South ends or by the dam and also the wall acrossed from the main ramp but never have fish Rabit Gulch much accept for the major points that go into the bay.

yep i do rember ya out there in the same area we were fishing.. sounds like ya did better on the eye's then we did tho.. tommy was haveing a hard time getting the hang of the bottom bouncers tho.. and was snaging up more then anything.. so going to the cranks was a good move for us.. to bad i did not know it was you.. i had 2 doz worms i would have give ya had i known ya needed some! lol [sly]

and yes TD did do some great recon for us as well!!

I think we saw you saturday, we were in the Smokercraft 2 adults 1 kid. we were bottom bouncing and jigging by the island. 24' was the magic depth, lots of 12-15" eyes 1-16" & 1-20" plus loads of perch we ended up with a full livewell
[signature]
yep i rember your boat as well i think we were getting in your way more then once..lol thats why i moved out of the area around the island on sunday, there was just getting to meny boat up in there to be long lineing cranks..

i did run in to BFT member deepcycle on saterday as well.. sure do wish i had his boat! nice! [sly] maybe he will chime in as well.. he sure was getting a kick out of watching tommy swing and miss them perch.. the perch did like them yumm crawdads tho.. once i put a chunck of perch on it for him he did hook a lot more with it tho..

Dumb Question but is Highway 40 the one over in Rabbit Gulch?
[signature]
why yes it is.. run's from rabbit gulch to indian creek.. that's the old road befor they made the lake... i have used the old road as a boat ramp for years on both sides.. did not have to pay to when i was useing it tho..

I may be heading up in my little boat on the 20th with my cousin and just don't want to run all the way over with my little 9.9 motor. I will probably launch form there as all else fails I can always pick my boat up empty with the motor pulled.
[signature]
you should be able to put in at Rabbit gulch no problem.. if ya dont have a 4x4 ya might want to hand launch tho..
[signature]
Mine is a 4X4.
[signature]
Tell Tommy I said congrats on his first eye.

Seems like a good adventure Ron. All the spits and re-start always makes a trip memorable.

They charge us 16 to sleep on our boat
[signature]
yeah that's what the guy said at the state park. if ya launch and leve your truck in the parking lot at the state park it's 16.00 a night.. if ya go to a primetive camp site it's 10.00 a night.. but ya have to pay to launch the boat at the state park! thats why i just launched mine off the old highway 40 at Indian creek.. not the best ramp (dirt) but for my boat it was ok..

still a rip off in my book.. [:/] lol but i think all the state parks are a rip off anyway..

Fuzzy:

I couldn't disagree with you more on this one.

Buy an annual pass and if you use any park 5 or more times in a year you are way ahead. I use the state parks for parking and access etc. more than that many times just ice fishing in a month!

Paving, fish cleaning stations, restrooms, launch facilities etc. and that's just for the fishing part, the picniking, hiking or other things that others may want to do while I'm in the boat are a also a benefit. Camping at some parks provides a relatively cheap overnight.

That's no "rip off" that's a bargain!!!

I asked about storing my 5th wheel there this summer and they wanted $75.00 as month I asked why they were so high and they said all the State Parks charged that for storage I called BS on that as I had already talked to my friends at Yuba and Deer Creek State Parks and they said they still charged $50.00 a month storage in peak season. What gives with Starvation?[mad]

+1 on the pass as I love mine.
