Fished the gorge sat. and sun. with 2 new Big Jon captains pack downriggers. Fished mainly in the red cliff area by the cut through. Did ok but not great, picked up a few nice hooked jaw kokes. Used ospreys on the end of rmt dodgers. Really liked the big jons but found the up/down switch to be a tad touchy. Maybe I'm just a little clumsy with my fingers but sometimes I had it going up when I wanted down and vice versa.
Also tried to jig up some pup macks but got hung up on some decent rainbows hitting the jigs. Ate a couple of the bows but they were a little muddy tasting, maybe cause they come off the bottom in about 45' of water.
Casted for smallies a little bit and caught them at will but only a couple had any size.
Rained fairly good sat. morning till close to noon with only a slight breeze, water temps were 67 and more than usual amount of water skiers. Great short getaway

Nice job Gary, too bad the macks didn't want to play. I noticed the same thing about the elec. downriggers.

[#000000]Yes, you had a good little get a way. Did you just fish the cut through area like you say or how much did you explore? That area has always been dead for us in the height of summer. And you are right, it is too close to the boat ramps and the skiers are brutal.[/#000000]

Fished the red cliffs just down from the cut through for kokes and tried for some pups in the antelope flat area but just got the bows there. Everyone says how easy it is for pups but gosh I do better when I fish for the bigger ones.-Gary

[#000000]I have found that sometimes it is all about location for the small Mack pups. Sometimes, for example, one side of an island or point will hold them, and just a few feet on the other side nothing. Same thing with the canyon locations. We never have had great luck there for many Mack pups but they are there. The best spots in my experience are the Pipeline and north. [/#000000]

In your are I have seen many spawning kokanee at the end of september and later. For some reason I have seen them stack up and circle the big boulders under the water there in about 15 feet and shallower. They can be very easy to catch then but I never do because they need to do their thing. But you can catch and release.

Thanks Ken for the vote of confidence, I thought it might just be me,still might be, but the more I used it I either got better at it or screwed up and had it going in the wrong direction. I think I'll get the hang of it though. I really like em but the short stop might be handy too. Anyways thanks for the encouragement.- Gary
BTW, happy to hear father- in- law is ok.[Smile]
