Excellent cod fishing was had through the early part of the week for groups from CT, MA and NY. Jigging in 180 ft of water on the eastern edge was most productive for medium cod and some large cod that were feeding in the newly arriving herring. Further, for striped bass enthusiasts, new arrival school bass and some keeper bass are showing in the Cape Cod Canal and off the South Shore between Brant Rock and Cohasset’s Minot’s Ledge. The bass are chasing the alewife.

Rick LePage’s group form Plainville, CT had good fishing on Monday, jigging through the schools of herring. Mostly market cod came over the rails between 8 and 15 pounds.
Bigger cod in the 20-40 pound class were higher up in the in the water column coursing through the herring schools. Cranking the jig and teaser rig up 20 ft. from the bottom produced some of the bigger cod for the week. The pool-winner was in the 20-pound class and the biggest pollock was 15 pounds. 6 haddock also added to the catch.

George Pickel’s group from Selden, NY had a great morning on Tuesday jigging mostly medium cod, as did Glen Flagler and friends from Schenectady, NY on Wednesday. Both trips produced limits of medium cod between 8-15 pounds with pool winners in the mid-twenty pound class. As I write, it appears that we will be able to fish both days of the weekend---a first for this abysmal spring season.

Light-tackle and fly charters will get started as soon as enough bass arrive. This inshore charters depart from Cohasset Harbor, Back River in Weymouth and Boston’s Rowe’s Wharf.
